Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they're witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship—or an early grave.
Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word . . . especially after she finds her mother's diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family's destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.
If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren't safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood—not even from each other.
I have been looking forward to this book forever. It was one of my most highly anticipated releases this year, and it was worth the wait. It was emotional, and romantic. I don't really read many historical novels, but this was so wonderful. The characters have a lot of depth to them and the story is amazing. I could not put this one down. I am enchanted by it, and it's a fantastic start to a series!
Cate is the oldest of the three sisters. After her mother dies she is the woman of the house and has promised to protect her sisters and keep them safe. She is a very head strong character. She's hard on her sisters, but they tend to be a little careless with magic, which is very dangerous to them. To make things worse, she only had six months until her seventeenth birthday and needs to either marry, or join the sisterhood. She discovers some secrets that mean she has to make sacrifices. My heart was aching for her as she has to figure out what she has to do to protect her family.
Now her sisters are great characters too, and completely different. Tess is the youngest and she is very smart and she's talented with magic. She is so mature for her age and I absolutely adored her. Maura is very much the opposite. She gets worked up very easily and is kind of a brat. I didn't really like Maura all that much because I felt she was so self destructive and also irresponsible, but I do feel sorry for her a bit. She doesn't think about her actions and how it can be dangerous to others though.
The romance aspect was great. I love Finn. He is just so awesome! He's smart, sweet, hard working, and just perfect for Cate I think. Paul has known Cate forever, and they always played as children. Everyone just assumes that Cate will marry him, but I found him arrogant, and pushy. I think he just assumed he and Cate would marry too, and he treats her like she's a possession of his, and not like someone who really cared for someone would. I mean yes, he was sweet at times, but I just didn't feel it with him.
I can't go into too much more without spoiling anything. I wish there was a bit more action in the story, but I felt that we got to know a lot about some of the people and what is going on. There are still plenty of things that we don't know too, but I think this book is a fabulous set-up to the next book in the series. Oh, and OMG the cliffhanger at the end!! I seriously almost died! I wanted to sob like a child and throw my nook across the room. Though I think if the hubs saw me throwing a mini tantrum over a book, he might have me institutionalized!! I really loved this book, and I am really, really looking forward to the next one. It can't come soon enough. 4.5 out of 5 stars
