What To Do In the Zombocalypse
By
Rhiannon Frater

Ever since I started writing the AS THE WORLD DIES zombie trilogy (THE FIRST DAYS, FIGHTING TO SURVIVE, SIEGE), I have had to consider the worst imaginable scenario: the rise of the zombie hordes.  Though I have enjoyed zombie films for years and love a good scare, I had never actually considered what I would do in case the zombie apocalypse actually happened.  But once I stared writing my own zombie stories, I found myself hyper-aware of my environment on a daily basis.  I would enter a building and immediately start mapping out my exit strategy and identifying potential weapons.
After I moved on to other tales of horror, my hyper-awareness diminished over time, but every once in a while, I will see a staggering form in the corner of my eye and immediately go on the alert.
While writing the AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES, I again was plunged into the mindset of survival.  Each untold tale is a short story about characters that inhabited the AS THE WORLD DIES universe, but may not have had a major role.  The UNTOLD TALES is my chance to give those background characters a moment in the spotlight and delve into their own story of survival.
Since the stories from the latest installment in the series are fresh in my mind, I will draw from AS THE WORLD DIES UNTOLD TALES VOLUME 2 for this list.
  1. Arm yourself.
Assuming you are away from home when the zombies rise, the first course of action will be to find a weapon.  This could be an easy task if you work in law enforcement or the military, or if you’re a Texan.  A lot of Texans carry concealed gun licenses and may already be armed.  But for those of us who don’t already carry a firearm, we’ll need a solid weapon that can be used to bash in the heads of the meandering zombies.  It should also have some length to it, so you can shove the zombies away.  An aluminum baseball bat is a great melee weapon, but other objects can work as well. Take off the lampshade of a heavy lamp if you have to.  Screwdrivers, crowbars, knives, whatever you can lay your hands on might give you a fighting chance at survival.  In the UNTOLD TALES VOL 2, Lenore wields a coatrack.

  1.  Get yourself out of the danger zone.
This is a tough one if you end up in a heavily infested area.  It’s best to find other survivors and group together so you can fight your way through if you have to.  Have a location you are aiming for, like a rescue center or someone’s vehicle.  If you’re heading for a building or a vehicle, make sure that you have access.  The last thing you want to do is break a window or bust a door and end up with easy access for the undead. It is preferable to get yourself out of any downtown areas as soon as you can.  If you can’t traverse the streets, then go up.  There is always the chance for a rooftop evacuation. Just make sure to barricade the stairwells and disable the elevators anyway you can on the way up.

  1. Grab Supplies.
Most people are going to be heading home.  Neighborhoods are going to be jammed with people trying to get to their house to grab supplies or find family members, or rescue pets.  If you decide to go home, do not consider it a safe area unless your house has been previously prepared to withstand a zombie onslaught (and you know some people have done this).  Grab what you need and fast.  Your evacuation kit should look pretty much like any disaster kit. Food, water, flashlight, batteries, matches, sleeping bags, etc.  The longer you take grabbing this stuff, the more dangerous the situation will be.  Try to have an emergency pack ready to go in an easy access location.  Then get out of there!

  1. Have a pre-arranged meeting place (and a backup) for all your family members.
The rescue center should be your first stop if there is one.  You’ll have a better shot at survival when being protected by police and military.  And let’s be honest, we’re all so zombie-aware now that the mistakes you see in the movies most likely won’t be repeated in real life.  The military and police will be your best shot at survival if you haven’t prepared beforehand.  If you opt not to go to the shelters, then make sure your family knows where to meet up with you.  A location outside of the town or city is preferable if you decide to not go to a shelter.

  1. Find a community to survive with.
The truth of the matter is that you will not survive alone.  You will need others to help you fight off the zombies and find resources.  Grouping with other armed survivors is your best shot.

  1. Find a building or a location you can fortify.
Don’t stay out in the open. Don’t live in tents. Don’t rely on cans on a string as an alarm system.  Find a building that you can fortify and defend.  It should also be able to hold supplies, have living space, and have high ground where you can spot the zombie hordes from a distance.

  1. Wherever you end up, always have an exit strategy.
Until the military wipes out the zombies, you will always be in peril.  Always have an exit strategy, no matter where you are staying. Always be armed. Always be vigilant.

  1. Be prepared and hope you’re lucky.
The best chance for survival in any disaster scenario is to be prepared before it happens.  And just hope…just hope...you end up one of the lucky ones.

  1. Great post! What's really awesome is I always pay close attention to the advice in posts like this. I've already told my husband that the sword we got as a wedding gift is mine in the event of a zombie apocalypse!

    1. Haha! We have a cheese cutter set and there is this fork looking thing that's small, but sharp. I would so grab that. It won't hinder me, but it's good enough to stab a zombie through the head. :)

  2. Baha. I'm like Andrea. I read this nodding going. "Uhuh!" Haha. My plan is to go to the North Pole. After a few days there the zombies will freeze! Or so I'm hoping! Did you see this house: http://all-that-is-interesting.com/post/4956385434/the-first-zombie-proof-house Freaking awesome!

    1. That is pretty freaking awesome. What I am wondering though, is if the glass is shatter proof, or bullet proof or whatever. You know that the concrete slabs that cover up all the windows don't move that quick. If you had a horde of zombies attacking you wouldn't have time to get them all covered if the glass was breakable.

    2. True! But the house seems to be in the sticks though so I imagine he can fight the stragglers off while he closes the house down. Plus, if you,re going to build a house like this, any "riot" in the news will be zombies to this guy! Haha

    3. That's a good point! Either way it's super awesome! I'm sure this dude has all sorts of traps and stuff set up around the perimeter of his land too. Probably security camera's and alarms and such things too.

    4. Actually, there is a high cement wall that encloses the whole area. They're pretty safe.
