Things That Make Me Mad: Book Piracy

Okay this subject comes up over and over again. It's a shame that it does, and unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about it. Book Piracy. It makes me sick that people do this!! Really I want to go find these people and kick them. Tell them they are disrespectful, selfish, jerks! It happens to so many authors, and it infuriates me. The latest case is the awesome Kendall Grey. I love this woman, she is freaking awesome! Her book is amazing! Everyone should want to read it, but legally. Would these people walk into a bookstore and steal a book? Probably not, so why do they think it's okay to download it illegally online. IT IS STILL STEALING!! It's so sad. The worst part is, that there isn't much the author can do about it. They can join the site and request that their work doesn't get uploaded onto the site, but it will pop up somewhere else. It's a never ending cycle. So I won't go on and on about it, but I am so upset that people are pirating her amazing book (which by the way all profits go to programs for whale education, not to the author, that is how amazing she is) that I am going to do a giveaway. That's right. I will buy someone this book. Right now it is only available in ebook from Amazon and B&N, but as long as you have a nook or a kindle or an app to read one of those you can enter. This is an adult book so you must be 18+ to enter please. I will give you the book details.

Strangers in reality, inseparable in dreams…

After years of suffocating under her boss’s scrutiny, whale biologist Zoe Morgan finally lands a job as director of a tagging project in Hervey Bay, Australia. Success Down Under all but guarantees her the promotion of a lifetime, and Zoe won’t let anything—or anyone—stand in her way. Not the whale voices she suddenly hears in her head, not the ex who won’t take no for an answer, and especially not the gorgeous figment of her imagination who keeps saving her from the fiery hell of her dreams.

Gavin Cassidy hasn’t been called to help a human Wyldling in over a year, which is fine by him. Still blaming himself for the death of his partner, he keeps the guilt at bay by indulging in every excess his rock star persona affords. That is, until he’s summoned to protect Zoe from hungry Fyre Elementals and learns his new charge is the key to restoring order in the dying Dreaming. He never expects to fall for the feisty Dr. Morgan…nor does he realize he may have to sacrifice the woman he loves to save an entire country.

*This book contains graphic language, sex, and some violence. Not suitable for readers under the age of 18.

**The author will donate all profits from the sale of the JUST BREATHE trilogy to programs that educate people about whales and the challenges they face.

  1. This sucks! It really does! Honestly though, it's rare that a book is NOT pirated, so no author should really be surprised or get too upset about it. Such is life with the internet sadly. Just something writers have to deal with.

  2. Thanks for drawing attention to piracy. Unfortunately, Giselle is right - it's hard to find a book that's not been pirated. But that still doesn't make it right. Thanks for taking a stand on my (and authors everywhere!) behalf and for doing this INHALE giveaway. You are BEYOND awesome, woman! THANK YOU!

    1. You're welcome!! You know I love you chick!! I know this happens all the time, but every once in a while it just gets me all riled up again and I feel the need to say something.

    2. No no I'm not saying it's right at all. It gets me upset as much as Amy, especially when it's a self published author. Sorry this happened to you Kendall! But look at the positive side, you know you made it when... ;)

    3. Haha! I think we all understood what you meant hon! It's just a fact that it will happen. As much as it sucks, that's just the way it is. :(

  3. Yeah, it really sucks that people do stuff like that. And how great of Kendall to donate some of her profits!

    1. I think it's amazing of her. Not just from this book either. She is donating her profits from the whole Just Breathe trilogy.

  4. This is awesome of you, Amy. No matter how you slice it, this sucks. I don't think there's an author out there who would feel in any way good about their book being pirated. Kendall has worked four years on this book. It's been a labor of love. I've only known her for over a year now, but I've seen the work she's put into it in that time. She's not even trying to make money on the book. For anyone to feel entitled to steal her, or any author's, work, is sickening.
    You rock, Amy!

    1. It's just so horrible. I can't imaging how the authors feel. It seriously makes me sick. I just wanted to do something to show Kendall how much I adore her and how much I hate that she has become a victim.

  5. Amy - I couldn't agree with you more. This ticks me off. What I don't get is how these people think it's okay. Like it's not really stealing since you're just downloading it. My students think the same thing about music. What' the big deal they say. Makes me so mad. I usually give them "the speech" when this topic comes up.

I'm glad you posted about it.

    1. I personally don't understand how people can't see that they are stealing. It's so aggravating trying to explain that just because you can easily get it online, doesn't make it okay. *sigh*

  6. People can be bad like that I'm afraid, I'm not sure we'll ever find a way to stop it :(
If people don't want to pay for a book, borrow one from the library! If you want a specific book, bite the bullet and pay for it! Books for Nook and Kindle are reasonably priced!

  7. This is a great post since it's going to spread book piracy awareness. It's also awesome how proceeds from inhale will be donated to such a great cause!

  11. Pirating is horrible. I just don't get it. Pirating music, pirating books, movies, whatever! The original creators of any content work so hard to complete their masterpieces, to have that triumph taken away from them is sickening. A masterpiece of any sort is worth spending money on.

Gah, I'm at a loss for words.
