Overview

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school . . . again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.

Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp.

Suddenly, mythical creatures seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy's Greek mythology textbook and into his life. The gods of Mount Olympus, he's coming to realize, are very much alive in the twenty-first century. And worse, he's angered a few of them: Zeus's master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy has just ten days to find and return Zeus's stolen property, and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. On a daring road trip from their summer camp in New York to the gates of the Underworld in Los Angeles, Percy and his friends–one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena–will face a host of enemies determined to stop them. To succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of failure and betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

My Thoughts

After watching the movie I was wondering why I never read this series. I guess I never really thought about it. I am glad that I finally decided to though. I really enjoyed this book a lot. I love Greek Mythology and this was a fantastic adventure into it!! Though the characters are young, it didn't feel like reading a book for children. There is plenty of action, adventure, and great character development in this.

Percy has been to so many different schools. He is always being kicked out. This time something crazy happens and it seems impossible, but he knows it's true. No one believes him of course, but then he discovers there is a lot more to it. He ends up going to camp half-blood and discovering that he is the son of one of the Greek Gods. Then after certain events, he has to go on a dangerous mission to to find the stolen Lightning Bolt that belongs to Zeus before a war of the Gods starts. He sets off on this journey across the country. He is a very tough young kid. I don't think that I would have been able to handle even a quarter of what he goes through. He is smart and does what needs to be done. He just wants to do the right thing.

I don't really know what else to say. I could go into the story, but trust me when I say you just have to read it. This is filled with adventure. I really enjoyed everything about this book. The characters are great, the plot is amazing, and mythology is always something I enjoy reading about. This was such a fun and entertaining book and I can't wait to get to the rest of the series. I listened to the audiobook of this and the reader was fantastic. I really felt like I was going along on the journey with them. I felt like Percy was actually telling me the things that were happening. If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it. If you enjoy audiobooks, this one is very well done!! 4 out of 5 stars.

  1. I really enjoyed this series. Book two is my least favorite, but I loved The Lightening Thief. I can't believe how different the movie was, too. Have you read The Heroes of Olympus series? It's a spinoff and I thought book one was better than this series. I still havent read my copy of book two. Big shocker.
Anyway, nice review. I've just started listening to audiobooks again.

  2. Oh an audiobook!? I need to get me some I did try a couple and it was pretty cool. I loved this series! I actually wasn't that into it until the 4rd book I found it a bit too MG and predictable, but book 4 & 5 especially are much darker and totally awesome! Excited to see what you think!

    1. I love audiobooks. I can also fit in books that I have been wanting to read by listening to them when I normally wouldn't be able to actually read. I have been getting them from my library. If I had a job I would get a membership to audible. I am about to start book 2 in the series now. My library has the whole series on audio. They also have the Heroes of Olympus book 1&2 which I will get after I finish this series.

    1. I get distracted when I listen sometimes too, but I find when I am cleaning or at night playing a game on my phone or something, I can really get into listening to a book and not get distracted too much.

    1. The book and the movie were way different!! I am excited to read the second book. I just checked out the audiobook from the library. Are they going to use the same actors for the next movie? It seems like they might be getting a bit too old now. They really should have filmed back to back.

  8. I've been kind of skeptical of Percy Jackson because it's about, like, a bunch of pre-teens. But I'm so glad to hear that it doesn't feel like a kids' book! Everyone raves about this series, so I should probably give it a try. Listening to it on audio seems like a good idea! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)

    1. I think that's why I avoided it for so long. It seemed younger than I would normally read. Though now I have found I really love MG books. It doesn't really read like a MG book though. It's like a YA mythology/fantasy book.

  10. I'm so glad that you enjoyed this one, Amy! I've always loved anything Rick Riordan from the moment I finished this book. I'm now a total addict! ;) The Heroes of Olympus series, a spin off of this series, is also really great, if you get a chance to try it. I'm thinking about rereading this series, since it's been such a long time since I read it! I may go the audiobook route, just to see how I like it. =)

Fabulous review Amy! I can't wait to see your thoughts on the next book!
