Overview

Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky — and unending — lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.

It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul.

My Thoughts

I have been looking forward to this book for quite a while now and I have to say that it was worth the wait. I have been really enjoying "reaper" stories lately so this one was a must read for me. I loved the characters and the story. It was an easy read that kept me glued to the book. I wanted to know if things would work out, but I also didn't want it to end! It is told from both Finn and Emma's POV and I loved that. I am kind of a sucker for dual POV's.

Finn is a great character. He is broken, but still extremely sweet and caring. He has such determination and is pretty reckless at times too, but his reasons are very good. He totally melted my heart. He is a reaper for the Inbetween and he is being punished for something that he did a long time ago. He fell in love with Allison and he did something that is very against reaper law. Now that Allison is back in the form of Emma he will do everything to protect her from Maeve who is out for revenge. I do have to say that Finn is pretty stupid for certain things that he did, and that he risked too much and put innocent people in danger, but he did it for love, so all has to be forgiven. I am totally a hopeless romantic! Oh, and did I mention that he is funny too?!

I really liked Emma too. She is a little bit boring, but she has had a tough life. She lost her dad and now has all these freak accidents happen to her all the time. The only person who she ever really spends time with is her best friend Cash. Her mom isn't really very motherly. She is always on Emma to take her meds so she doesn't end up in the mental institution again. Emma knows that weird stuff happens, but she won't tell anyone, even Cash, out of fear of having to return to the Institution. Even she starts to doubt her sanity at some points. When she finally starts to get to know Finn, she realizes that she really does care about him.  She is stupid at times though too. Like, if someone tells you to stay where you are, you don't run off to an empty bathroom by yourself. Really, I wanted to smack Emma around a few times and tell her not to be such a stupid girl!

The relationship that forms between Finn and Emma is very sweet. I loved their interactions and was aching along with them since there is no way that they can be together. Finn is determined to protect her from Maeve, but he keeps getting more and more punishment as he pushes it too far with breaking the laws he is supposed to follow. He knows the consequences though and he still won't give up. The more he does to protect her, the more he is forced to be away from her, ultimately putting her in more danger.

This book was full of suspense, action, and romance. The secondary characters are just as great as the main characters, the story flow is awesome, and the romance is slow building and really sweet. The way this book ended was fantastic! There is a bit of a twist thrown in. It left me wanting more, but not dying in agony with a huge cliffhanger. It ended in a perfect way to go into the next book in the series! I can't wait to get back into this world!! 4 out of 5 stars.

Excerpt

“I know.” I sighed, then turned back to my camera, hoping he’d drop the drama. I clicked through a picture of our mascot doing a cartwheel. The cheerleaders spurring on the crowd that sat in shiny silver bleachers. Two football players in blue and white face paint. Half of them were ruined, marked up by a random white spot that kept appearing on the prints. “Have you met the new guy yet?”
I wished I could stop thinking about him. Yeah, he’d saved my life, but did that require that every thought be devoted to the guy? Couldn’t I just bake him a pie or something? I blinked and there he was again. Green eyes wide, amazed and nervous all at the same time. Something in my chest fluttered.
You’d be dead if it weren’t for him.
Part of me couldn’t help but think it would be over if it weren’t for him. I didn’t know whether to be angry or grateful.
“What new guy?” Cash asked.
“The one I sort of met in the quad today,” I said. “He saved me from being squished.”
“You mean the someone who knocked you out of the way?” He looked like he was fighting a smile. “So he’s a guy?”
“Yeah, I think he must be new. I’ve never seen him before.” I think.
“I don’t think I’ve met him. What did he look like?”
I shrugged, feeling my face flush. “I don’t know.” I bit my lip, stalling. “About your height. Kind of short brown hair, green eyes…” I averted my eyes. “Cute.”
“Do you like him?” Cash finally broke into a full-on grin. “Of course you do! He saved you. Chicks love that crap. Does this mean you’re actually going to go on a real date now?”
“Can we talk about something else? Please?”
“You’re no fun.”
I laughed. “If I’m not fun, why do you keep coming back?”
“I ask myself that every day.” I punched him in the arm and he chuckled. “Hey, you’re coming to the senior bonfire thing tonight, right? Maybe your new boyfriend will be there.”

Have you seen the book trailer? I love it!!

  1. I've really enjoyed reaper stories lately as well. All different kinds of reapers like Gina Damico's Scorch or Darynda Jones's First Grave on the Left. They're all so unique. Thanks for the chance to win this!

  2. Great review Amy! I didn't realize this book was about reapers O_O That's like.. really awesome! I really want to read it now. Honestly that cover is just some bleh. I loved the other one so much better. I've been seeing this one on SO many indie books that I really got bored with it. Glad you enjoyed it, though. I laughed at saying Emma was boring lol. Also, have you ever read the Darynda Jones adult series? They are HILARIOUS and freaking awesome about a reaper. I think you'd love them!!

  4. I'm glad that you enjoyed this book, Amy. I read it last week and really liked it as well. There was something about it that made me really like the book. The romance was very sweet. I agree about Emma being a little boring though!
    Lovely review, Amy! :)

    1. I understand why she is boring though. If I seemed to attract accidents and almost die all the time I think I would be pretty boring too. I wouldn't want to go places where I would feel more at risk.

    1. OMG, Doesn't Finn just melt your heart?!! I love him!! I love all the characters, except for Maeve, she's a psycho. I get it though, so I guess I somewhat feel bad for her, but Emma doesn't deserve wrath!

  11. I had no idea that this was about reapers, but I guess those little scythe thingies should have been a giveaway. Great review, I haven't read a reaper book before so I'm thinking that this may be a good place to start! I am a sucker for dual POV's lately as well!

  13. Great review! I'm glad you enjoyed it! Finn was a really great character, I agree! At first I didn't know it was a companion series so I was completely lost about the ending and thinking "How would you have a sequel then" but then I discovered they would be companion novels :P

  14. I don't mean this in a "mean" way but phew! I don't know how you did it - I cannot seem to get into this book. I read 20 pages then had to break, read like close to 50 more pages and still couldn't get drawn in. I feel like I have no connection to the characters and that the plot is going too slow for my liking. I may try it again a little ways down the road but for now I just need to step back.

    1. It does take a while to get into. I think that since I read more than one book at a time, bouncing back and forth really helps if something isn't grabbing me right away. I know a lot of people can't read more than one book at a time though. I don't mind slower plots as long as I am getting information and I feel like I know it's going somewhere I will like.
