Overview

Fall under the spell of Wake—the first book in an achingly beautiful new series by celebrated author Amanda Hocking—and lose yourself to the Watersong.

Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.

Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

My Thoughts

Mermaid books seem to be very in lately. They have been touch and go with me, but this was one that I really enjoyed. I was a bit put off by the third person POV at first, but it worked well for this book. Usually it makes it hard for me to really "get" the characters, but I felt like I got to know them all pretty well. I liked the darker themes of this story and the steady moving plot. I was very interested to know where things would go. I wanted to know more about the the three mysterious girls and why they wanted Gemma.

Gemma is a swimmer and in general a good girl. She loves to swim and she is really good at it. She lives with her dad and her sister. She goes off at night to swim in the the bay because it makes her feel good. She likes just being under the open sky at night in the water swimming for fun, not for practice. To me, Gemma is pretty much a normal girl with just a slight obsession with swimming. That is until she falls in with Penn, Lexi, and Thea. They do something to her and they want her to join them. She does everything she can to fight it, but the lure may be too strong to resist.

The secondary characters are great too. I really liked Alex. He is really sweet. I really wanted to get to know him better. Harper rubbed me the wrong way for a while, but eventually grew on me. At first I couldn't stand how she treated Gemma and acted like her mother instead of an older sister, but I get why she did. I just wanted her to relax a little bit once in a while.

This was a great mermaid story. I liked how different it was and that it was dark and creepy. These three girls are monsters, predators, something to be feared. They are also beautiful and can lure you in easily. I liked getting to know how they came to be and why they want Gemma so much, why it's so important for them. I liked the relationships that we see between Alex, Gemma, and Harper. How Gemma tried to resist the three girls even knowing what the consequences might be.

This is a fantastic book and I am really looking forward to more of this series. I loved the mystery and intrigue of it, the creepy undertones, the creative story. The romance was there, but not overwhelming. This book kept me turning pages and wanting to know what Gemma would do. Amanda Hocking's venture into the mermaid genre has lured me in for sure. 4 out of 5 stars

**UPDATE: Wake is also available as an audiobook you can listen to a sample by clicking here. I love audiobooks, so it's great to know that this is now available.

I also have the book trailer in case you want to watch it. It's really good.

    1. I have noticed that people seem to really like this or really not like it. I was a bit worried going into it. It's written in third person which I don't normally like very much, but I got used to it and it worked well with this story.

  4. Oh wow you liked this! I think we would disagree on this one though so I'm afraid to try it haa. I've read a lot of reviews and I'm really not a fan of mermaid books, from what I hear others say I dont think it would be for me. But we are #soulmates so maaaybe. I do like the darker, creepy tone though this one seems to have. The others I've read haven't been very dark so maybe that's the problem. I got like, 3 copies of this one so I think someone wants me to read it O_O It haunts me!!!

I'm glad to hear that the characters are great.

    1. This seems like a book that people either like or don't. I was nervous for it, but it happened to be a mermaid book that I enjoyed, even being written in third person which usually puts me off.

  10. So far I can say I've had a good luck when it comes to mermaid stories. I've read a couple of them that we're really good ( like Monstrous Beauty or Ripple) and a few that were pretty decent (like Vicious Deep). This one I've been staying away from, tho. Mainly because I didn't really enjoy Amanda's other series ( the one about trolls). However, your review got me very curious for this one and I would definitely love to try it now! I find our book tastes to be pretty similar and I'm pretty sure if you liked it so much I will too! ;) thank you for the great review and awesome giveaway!

    1. There have only been a few books that I wasn't bothered my the third person POV. I think I might be getting more used to them. It also depends on whether the author can still make you connect with the characters from the outside perspective.
