Mini Reviews: Radiant by Cynthia Hand & Cruisin' by Sarah Mlynowski

As most of you probably know, HarperTeen has a new imprint called Impulse for novellas and short stories. Today I am going to do a mini review of two of them. On the day they released HarperTeen had a giveaway and I was one of the winners to get a gift card to purchase all of the Impulse titles. I had already pre-ordered Radiant a while back, but I used the gift card to purchase all the rest. I am going to do my mini reviews on Radiant by Cynthia Hand and Cruisin' by Sarah Mlynowski.

From New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Hand comes a riveting original novella (available only as an ebook) set in the world of the Unearthly series.
Clara is desperate to get away—from the memories that haunt her in Wyoming and the visions of a future she isn't ready to face—and spending the summer in Italy with her best friend, Angela, should be the perfect escape. . . .
For as long as she can remember, Angela has been told that love is dangerous, that she must always guard her heart. But when she met Phen two years ago she was determined to be with him, no matter the costs. Now she must decide whether she can trust Clara with her secret, or if telling her the truth will risk everything she cares about.
Alternating between Angela and Clara's perspectives, Radiant chronicles the unforgettable summer that will test the bounds of their friendship and change their lives forever.

My Thoughts

I am a big fan of the Unearthly series, so when I saw there would be a novella I was all over it. This short story takes place during the summer before Clara and Angela go to college on their trip to Italy. It was a great way to hold me over until Boundless and get to know a little more about Angela's secret boyfriend. I really enjoyed that it goes back and forth between Clara and Angela's POV too. I loved being in Angela's head.

I won't go into the specifics of the characters since this is a short story, but I felt like I got to know Angela a little more. We discover who her boyfriend is, and how they ended up getting together. The thing is, there is more to it than him just being some random summer boyfriend. Clara see's something in him and knows that Angela needs to let him go and forget about him, but if she pushes it too much will their friendship survive? I really felt for Clara, she really just wants what is best for Angela, but Angela is blinded by love, and Phen is selfish and won't tell her to let him go.

Overall this was a fantastic story that bridges the gap between Hallowed and Boundless and has me even more excited to see where things go. Things are definitely going to be interesting with the new vision that Clara is having and with them getting closer to where Angela's vision is. If you are a fan of this series, this is a must read.

From the critically acclaimed author of Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn't Have) and the Magic in Manhattan series comes a fun short story about taking the plunge on the high seas, where not everything is what it seems.

Kristin is ready to take the next step. . . . The only problem is she hasn't found the right guy to take it with her. That's why she agreed to go on the ominously named Cruise to Nowhere with her best friend, Liz. There are plenty of cute guys on the ship to choose from if only Kristin can work up the nerve—and stop worrying about the reports in the tabloids that passengers on cruises have been mysteriously disappearing and that someone suspects it has to do with . . . vampires.

 My Thoughts

This was such a fun and entertaining story. This is very short, but packs a lot in to those few pages. It starts with two friends on a cruise ship, Liz and Kristin couldn't be more different. Kristin is just your average girl, and a little on the shy side. Liz on the other hand is totally hot, totally confident, and very outgoing. Kristin is determined to "do it" on this 3 day cruise, she just needs to find the right guy. All the talk of vampires on cruise ships and people disappearing ends up being an underlying fear and a joke throughout the cruise. As the end of the cruise nears, we are getting closer to believing this vampire rumor, it's just a matter of figuring out who the vampire or vampires are. I was so entertained by this short mystery. If you are looking for a super quick, fun, mindless read, pick this one up.

  4. Oh and I met a boy on a cruise when I was a teenager. We hang out together during the whole cruise. He was dreamy. We stayed in touch writing letters (because this was BEFORE email, lol). His name was Jimmy. LMAO

    1. I've never been on a cruise, but I met a boy on vacation once and we kept in touch through letters and occasional phone calls for a few years. I think the boys name was Chad. He was from Melbourne, FL.
