September Monthly Recap

Dude! For real I can't believe it's almost October. This year has flown by insanely fast. I love October though. It's my favorite month for many reasons. First of all, Halloween! That is my favorite day of the whole year I think. Then of course there is the beautiful Fall colors. October is when the colors on the trees really changes and it's just so pretty!! And then there's apple picking, getting pumpkins, and of course baking apple everything!! I also am a sucker for pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin, cookies.... well you get my point. So anyways, back to the topic of books. I got a bit sidetracked there. As horrible as I thought I did in September, I actually read quite a few books. I was having a reading slump and had a few not so great books that I gave up on, (After days of trying to read them) so I didn't think that I really read all that many books with all that wasted time. Some of the books I read might not have reviews yet, but the ones that do will link to the review.

Whew! 15 1/2 books. (I don't even know why I put Unspoken on the list, but after wasting 3 days I felt it deserved to be included since normally I read a book in 2 or 3 days.) Now onto how I actually did with my challenges... which honestly wasn't so good this month besides killing my Goodreads challenge!

So I am going to say 16 books in September. That puts my total at 134 (though on Goodreads I think it actually says 140 because of novellas and short stories) So I am at 112% on my goal for the year. I probably should up it to 175, but oh well. I like feeling awesome that I have rocked that challenge!

Though I am no longer doing the Debut author challenge, I am still keeping track of the debut books I read. I had my challenge goal as 11-16 books, so add in the 3 from this month I am at a total of 34. Yay for me!

I didn't add any books to the Sensational Seconds challenge this month. I had a set goal of 5-8 or something (I really should see what I set that at) I am still at 13, but I am at more than my goal.

And yes, still totally failing my TBR Pile Challenge. Once again, I didn't read any this month so my total stays at 5. I am pretty sure my goal is set at 11-16. So, I only need to read 5 before the end of the year to get to the lower number of my goal. Realistically, I am expecting a fail on this!!

I would love to know how you are doing with your reading and challenges. Overall I am happy with what I have accomplished. I never would have thought I would almost to 150 books read In October. That is just awesome for me. I swear, I am a slow reader. Thanks for stopping by to check out my progress!!

In 2015, a race of alien Others conquered Earth. They enslaved humanity not by force, but through an aggressive mind control that turned people into contented, unquestioning robots.

Except sixteen-year-old Althea isn’t content at all, and she doesn’t need the mysterious note inside her locket to tell her she’s Something Else. It also warns her to trust no one, so she hides the pieces that make her different, even though it means being alone.

Then she meets Lucas, everything changes.

Althea and Lucas are immune to the alien mind control, and together they search for the reason why. What they uncover is a stunning truth the Others never anticipated, one with the potential to free the brainwashed human race.

It’s not who they are that makes them special, but what.

And what they are is a threat. One the Others are determined to eliminate for good.

My Thoughts

The premise of this book sounded so interesting that I was really excited to read it.  I will admit that at first I was a little bit confused, but I easily fell into the story. I was so interested to know what was going on and more importantly how things got to be how they are and why Althea and Lucas are different. I figured some of it out, but it didn't make me enjoy this book any less. It still has plenty of mystery left to it at the end, but not enough to make you gouge your eyes out.

Althea is different and she knows it. She has spent her whole life trying to keep her secret hidden. Among emotionless people and getting sucked from one place to another, it has been stamped into her mond not to trust anyone. People don't really seem to notice her anyways. It's like she is just a passing thought, but nothing more. She is okay with that. It's easier to keep her secret safe that way. Not until she meets Lucas does her wall start to come down. She is able to finally embrace her emotions instead of run from them even if she isn't sure what they mean. She is determined to do whatever she can to find out though, and keep her and Lucas safe.

I am not really big into sci-fi books, so I was a bit nervous to read this, but it sounded really good. I loved the idea of this and the Others taking over Earth and other planets. I also wanted to know why Althea and Lucas were different and loved discovering it along with them. Their relationship is really sweet too. They need to learn to trust each other and it doesn't come easy. Growing up basically alone with no one you can trust takes a while to break. They work together to try to uncover the truth and start to fall for each other along the way.

I don't really know what to say about this book. I really enjoyed it and I thought that the story was really interesting. I really enjoyed the relationship between Lucas and Althea and I liked how the events of the story unraveled. My only problem was that it felt a little longer than necessary, and my mind would wander a bit before I could get back on track, but overall I thought it was a great book and I will definitely continue on with the series. 3.5 out of 5 stars

*This is the second book in a series. My review will not have spoilers for this book, but will have spoilers for the first book if you haven't read it.

Welcome to Never Land, the land of Never and the world of rock, the world of new experiences and sensations, a world where music runs through the veins of the dedicated, and love is taken and given with consequences. Never (Neve) Knight, the lead singer and manager of a band filled with the hottest guys in rock finally gets the dream that she wanted: a label signing her band The Never Knights. It is what she always wanted, a band of her own and playing her own kind of music. Getting her band to where it was came at a high price, including giving up the man who makes her heart race and her blood pound, the man who caused her to nearly lose her band. As she gets ready to go on her world tour, fate brings her close to Danny Blue again, and she's not sure if she can give him up a second time even if it means losing the band.

My Thoughts

After reading the first book in this series, Never Say Never, I was really looking forward to this one. I loved diving right back into the music and Never's world. I could almost feel the emotions running off of her throughout the book. This one gets a bit dark at times, but I loved the realistic feel to it. Things are not easy for her and each day really is a new struggle. There are quite a few twists thrown in that made me want to scream and yell. The one thing that I did miss in this one, is that there isn't as much actual music since there is a lot of other things going on.

Never grows a little bit in this one, but she is still the young vulnerable girl that we met in the first book. She really does try to do what she can to keep the band together and keep everyone happy even at the expense of her own happiness. She has a lot more stress too, with the band issues and some other surprises that have been thrown her way. She feels like she is losing control of everything, but somehow manages to hold it together. I didn't like how she seems to almost give up to easily sometimes, but everyone makes mistakes and sometime the pressure gets to be too much. In her case it seems to just swallow her whole.

Danny Blue isn't absent for long which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good because, let's face it, we all want more Danny Blue *swoon*, and bad because it definitely makes things a lot more complicated. Emotions run high in this book. Sadness, anger, passion, jealously, and rage. Never is glad to have Danny back and they can't resist each other, but there are many secrets that might threaten to pull them apart. Add in jealous band members, a major creep, and interesting family members and you have some really crazy and tense parts.

The story progression was fantastic. For a short book a lot of stuff happens and there are a lot of changes in the characters. Most notably I think in Steve. I really have a lot of respect for him and I was glad to get a bit more of him in this, but I thought it was a bit sad how he is at the end. I totally understand why though. We start off this book on a stage in London with the band living their dream and end with not knowing what will happen. With the way this one ended I am totally dying for the next book. I need to know where the story will go. I can say that I am now fully invested in the characters and their story and I need more. 4 out of 5 stars!

I felt his body tense up. I felt his breathing grow shallow. No sooner did he turn his baby-blue eyes to mine then I knew it had been a mistake. Our faces were close – painfully close. And I knew then that I'd given him hope.

“Neve...” he said hoarsely, his voice ragged with emotion.

I immediately stepped away. “Kyle, I'm so sorry...” I said as quickly as I could. “Was that weird? I didn't mean to be weird...” - Never Land (Never Knights #2) by Kailin Gow

How stupid could you be? I recriminated myself. I'd seen this happen a hundred times among girls and boys I grew up with. Always dating "within the group" - other Beverly Hills celebrities - always surprised when somehow people who grew up among models and strippers and playboys and alcoholics turned out to be functionally incapable of holding down an adult relationship. It was one of many reasons I'd never dated in high school. I hadn't wanted to get sucked down by the dysfunction of yet another celebrity family. And Here I was, dating the biggest celebrity of them all, Clarence Blue's son.

But you didn't know he was Clarence Blue's son when you fell for him. He'd just seemed like a normal guy - a normal, gorgeous, mind-numbingly sexy, talented guy, to be sure, but not scion of a family of psychopaths.  - Never Land (Never Knights #2) by Kailin Gow

seduced by power,
broken by control,
and consumed by love...

Vi has made her choice between Jag and Zenn, and the Resistance may have suffered for it. But with the Thinkers as strong as ever, the rebels still have a job to do. Vi knows better than anyone that there's more at stake than a few broken hearts.

But there is a traitor among them...and the choices he makes could lead to the total destruction of everything Vi has fought for.

Vi, Jag, and Zenn must set their problems aside for the Resistance to have any hope of ending the Thinkers' reign. Their success means everything...and their failure means death.

I loved Possession and Surrender so I am so super looking forward to Abandon. Now that is has a cover I had to have it as my WoW!!

But the other book that I have been dying to use as a WoW also got a cover last week, and that is Opal (Lux #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I had to use that one too!!

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well... There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different... And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger... and they know it.

I think anyone who reads my blog knows how much I love the Lux series. It's one of my favorite series ever and so I am dying to read this!! I already have had my copy pre-ordered since like June or something.

I would love to see what books you are pining for this week. Leave me a link and I will check it out! ;)

*This is the second book of a series. My review will not have spoilers for this book, but will contain spoilers for the first book if you haven't read it. The overview is a bit spoilery if you haven't read the first book also.

Amaliya Vezorak never believed in happy endings…

When Amaliya harnessed her necromancer powers to defeat her greatest enemy, she believed she had finally found a happy ending with Cian, her lover and the master of Austin. That happiness is short-lived when the vampire ruling over San Antonio attempts a takeover of Austin in order to capture Amaliya and use her power for his own devices.

To make matters worse, Samantha, Cian’s ex-fiancée, is seeing ghosts, the untested vampire hunters of Austin are running scared as a supernatural war looms, a mysterious man is hunting Amaliya with the help of her one time lover, Pete, and Rachoń, the Summoner’s favorite progeny, appears to be out for revenge.

When Amaliya’s grandmother, a powerful medium, experiences terrible visions that reveal there is another necromancer vampire and she is crying out for help, Amaliya realizes happy endings do not come easily…

My Thoughts

I want to start off by doing some crazy fan girl dance or something. For real, this book was amazeballs!! I thought I loved the first one, but this one was just overflowing with awesome!! Rhiannon turned up the heat, the action, and the creepy factor in this one and I loved every second of it!! The character development is really great too. I love getting to know the different characters better.

Amaliya is still one kick ass chick and things get a lot more crazy for her. She of course still has the spunky personality that I loved in the first one, but I love seeing the softer side of her too. It comes out a lot more in this book than it did in the first one now that she is more adjusted to the fact she is a vampire/necromancer. Her relationship with Sam is still quite intense and I love their interactions. Amaliya is a seriously funny, tough as nails chick and I can't get enough of her.

We meet some pretty dangerous characters too. Rachon for one is an old vampire that is not one to be messed with, but it seems that she is now a big thing to worry about. She is coming to Austin and Amaliya knows that it's a very bad thing. There is also another Necromancer/Vampire they have to worry about. Innocente has been seeing her. On top of that Sam is even more pissed than before because now she is seeing dead people thanks to Amaliya's blood. Forget the fact that Amaliya saved her life, she is livid about it!! Pete is on a mission to help Amaliya. It's very sweet and sad at the same time. He loves her so much, but of course we know that she is happy being a vampire and she loves Cian.

This book is just full of action and suspense. It gets very intense as they realize there is more to it than just Rachon wanting revenge and a necro-vamp calling out for help. This book had hooked! There is so much going on and we learn a lot of new things, but it's never to the point where it's too much at a time. It's like an adrenaline rush that you can't get enough of. And lets not forget the steamy, sexy scenes. We still get some of those too, though not as much since they are fighting for their lives. (or un-lives I guess) I can't really say much more except you are in for one hell of a ride reading this book! 5 out of 5 stars.

What gave you the idea to make The Summoner a Necromancer too? It's a totally awesome idea!!

I honestly don’t remember how that came about. I suspect it was born out of the dream that initially gave birth to that universe. I just remember that it felt really perfect to have this ancient vampire have much more to him than just the usual traditional vampire lore.  His background was a lot of fun to explore and I think it makes him that much more terrifying because he can control the dead.

When you initially wrote Pretty When She Dies was it planned as a trilogy? It could totally be a stand alone, though I am glad that it wasn't. ;)

This is a weird one to answer. In some ways, it was written to be a standalone. When I started writing the book, I thought of it as a standalone. By the end of the book, I had little bits in the story that were ready to become much more. I did try to wrap up the first book to a certain extent so that if I didn’t continue in that world the readers would have a resolution.  But if you read the first book then immediate start on the second you can see all the threads form the first book weaving into the sequel.
A lot of what happens in the first book lays the foundation for the second, though I felt the overall story arc of the first book does reach a conclusion.

Amaliya is a total bad ass!! Did you write her character based on anyone?

I don’t base my characters on real people. My characters just appear in my head and I have a process where I get to know them better. A lot of times they surprise me. Amaliya was very difficult for me to write because she is incredibly different from me. We’re polar opposites in many ways. Her inclination to run away from problems while putting herself in dangerous situations is just something I don’t really get. It’s through Cian’s eyes that I was finally able to “get” the character. I really do enjoy writing her and feel she grows a lot in the sequel.

Are any of the characters based on real people? You know, like their personalities or certain traits?

I don’t base characters on real people. They’re just born in my head. I have consciously given only two characters traits of people I know because it fit the personality of the fictional person. Rune from AS THE WORLD DIES (THE FIRST DAYS, FIGHTING TO SURVIVE, SIEGE) and one of the moms in my upcoming YA Paranormal novel, THE MIDNIGHT SPELL, have aspects of two people I know, but they’re not carbon copies of them in any way.

You are a master at writing the creepiness!! Do you ever have crazy nightmares about some of the things you put in your books?

All my books are based on dreams except for AS THE WORLD DIES (THE FIRST DAYS, FIGHTING TO SURVIVE, SIEGE), which was technically based on a vivid image that popped into my head at work. My nightmares are pretty epic and I always wake up with the thought “Can I use this?”  PRETTY WHEN SHE DIES was born out of an incredibly vivid dream that utterly terrified me. I dreamed it from Amaliya’s perspective, so it was very scary. When I woke up, I was relieved it was a dream. The opening scene from PRETTY WHEN SHE KILLS is also from a dream.

I really loved the names of the characters in the book. How did you come up with them? I especially loved Innocente, was that intentional due to her religious nature?

Naming characters can be a weird process. Sometimes I just toss out names until something sticks. I know Jenni and Katie from AS THE WORLD DIES underwent several name changes, but I don’t remember what those were now. I kept writing out names and if it didn’t click, I’d erase it. I kept doing that until it felt “right.”
Amaliya was very hard to name. I was virtually screaming in my head at her “WHAT IS YOUR NAME?” Nothing fit. Then one day at work someone called and introduced herself by that name and I internally knew that was her name.  I had to find the spelling of the name, etc, but it fits her perfectly.
Innocente just fit. I really liked her having an old school religious name. Cian was a quick fit. I just can’t imagine him by any other name.

I am always thinking about food and I can't help but ask, does Fenton really have the best peach cobbler in Texas? I love peach cobbler!!

Fenton is a made up town!  The best beach cobbler I’ve had, outside church socials growing up, was in a café in Fredericksburg, Texas that is now closed. I miss that peach cobbler. It was amazing.

Mountains or ocean?

Mountains.  Oceans have sharks.

Coffee or Tea?

Tea. I hate the aftertaste of coffee. Unless its cappuccino in a café in Italy.

Heels or sneakers?

Heels…Betsey Johnson or Jeffery Campbell, please!  Unless zombies show up…then sneakers!

Vampires or zombies?

Vampires. I have lots of crosses in my house.

Soup or salad?

Crayons or markers?

Crayons. You can do better shading!

Okay enough of the silliness! Thanks so much for stopping by Rhiannon. You rock!! I am looking forward to see how the whole series wraps up in Pretty When She Destroys!!

The first book in the series, Pretty When She Kills is available now as an audiobook too. I have put the links below for you. Pretty When She Kills will also be available in audiobook form, but isn't at this time!

I have the fantastic cover of Just for Now by Abbi Glines for you today thanks to AToMR Tours. This cover was designed by Stephanie Mooney of Mooney Designs. I also have the book trailer for you which was done by Hellion Works. Just for Now is book #4 in the Sea Breeze series.

Book description:

The day Preston Drake figured out that wealthy women paid well for a set of tight abs and a pretty face his life turned around.

The run down rat-infested trailer he had shared with his alcoholic mother and three younger siblings was now only a place he visited to pay the bills and stock the pantry with food.

He no longer worried about his family starving or living without electricity. The money he made entertaining rich older women more than covered his family’s needs and his own. He had it all figured out. Except…

There was this girl.

She was as innocent as he was tainted.

Amanda Hardy wished her knees didn’t get weak when Preston walked into a room. She hated the fact her heart raced when he flashed his smile in her direction. He had a different girl in his bed every night. He was the kind of boy a smart girl ran from. So, why was she coming up with ways to get close to him? Even when it was obvious he wanted to keep her at a distance.

Maybe her heart knew something the world didn’t. Maybe Preston Drake was more than just a pretty face.

Expected Publish Date: October 23, 2012

I love this. It's so simple, romantic looking, and pretty. I also have the fabulous trailer for you too!!

About the author:

Abbi Glines can be found hanging out with rockstars, taking out her yacht on weekends for a party cruise, sky diving, or surfing in Maui. Okay maybe she needs to keep her imagination focused on her writing only. In the real world, Abbi can be found hauling kids (several who seem to show up that don’t belong to her) to all their social events, hiding under the covers with her MacBook in hopes her husband won’t catch her watching Buffy on Netflix again, and sneaking off to Barnes and Noble to spend hours lost in the yummy goodness of books. If you want to find her then check Twitter first because she has a severe addiction to tweeting @abbiglines.   Facebook is also somewhere she visits a little too often. She blogs regularly but rarely about anything life changing. She also really enjoys talking about herself in third person.

The scorching tale of one girl, two brothers and a love triangle…that’s not.

Olivia Townsend is nothing special. She’s just a girl working her way through college so she can return home to help her father run his business. She’s determined not to be the second woman in his life to abandon him, even if it means putting her own life on hold. To Olivia, it’s clear what she must do. Plain and simple. Black and white.

But clear becomes complicated when she meets Cash and Nash Davenport. They’re brothers. Twins.
Cash is everything she’s always wanted in a guy. He’s a dangerous, sexy bad boy who wants her in his bed at any cost. He turns her insides to mush and, with just one kiss, makes her forget why he’s no good for her.

Nash is everything she’s ever needed in a guy. He’s successful, responsible and intensely passionate. But he’s taken. Very taken, by none other than Marissa, Liv’s rich, beautiful cousin. That doesn’t stop Olivia from melting every time he looks at her, though. With just one touch, he makes her forget why they can never be together.

Black and white turns to shades of gray when Olivia discovers the boys are hiding something, something that should make her run as far and as fast as she can. But it’s too late to run. Olivia’s already involved. And in love. With both of them.

Both brothers make her heart tremble. Both brothers set her body on fire.

She wants them both.

And they want her.

How will she ever choose between them?

Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance- Please be advised that this book is NOT YA friendly, not even in a New Adult category!

As if that's not enough, I have a fantastic excerpt for you.

Excerpt 5:

“I like to use all my senses to get a good lay of the land.”
“Lay of the land?” she asks, the corners of her mouth dimpling.
“Of course,” I reply.  “So I can plan my attack.”
“Do tell.”
“First I start with touch.”  I reach out and brush one dimple with my fingertip then slowly drag it inward, across her pouty bottom lip.  “Touch is invaluable.  The texture of the terrain tells me how…aggressive my attack needs to be.  Some places require a much more delicate approach than others.”
“I see,” she says softly, her warm breath tickling my finger.  “What else?”
“Smell,” I say, sliding my hand into her hair to hold it back as I bury my face in the lightly scented skin of her neck.  “A certain scent can tell me if I’m heading in the right direction.  Something sweet.  Something…musky,” I murmur.
I hear her gasp when I gently bite the flesh beneath her ear.  “And hearing,” I whisper.  “Sometimes the softest sounds, even a moan can tell me a great deal about how close I am to my attaining my goal.”
I feel her hands latch onto my forearms.  Her fingernails are biting into my skin through my shirt.  All I can think about is how I want to feel them on the skin of my back instead.
Her breath is coming fast and shallow in my ear.  “What else?” she pants.
I lean back and look down into her face.  Her lids are heavy over her dazzling eyes and her cheeks are flushed with everything that’s happening between us.  She doesn’t want to stop either.  There’s no doubt in my mind.
Her eyes flicker to my mouth and back again.  “And what do you taste?”
“Everything.  I want to taste everything.”

This is a book that sounds like a must read for fans of this type of book. I know I am dying to read it!! Now onto the giveaway. One ebook copy of M. Leighton's fantastic New York Times bestseller New Adult book, The Wild Ones. I loved this book. It has mature content and I would recommend it for 17 years old and up.  Open Internationally.

**MATURE CONTENT ADVISORY: May not be suitable for younger readers**

Passion as hot as midnight in the South and love as wild as the horses they tame.

Camille “Cami” Hines is the darling daughter of the South’s champion thoroughbred breeder, Jack Hines. She has a pedigree that rivals some of her father’s best horses. Other than feeling a little suffocated at times, Cami thought she was pretty happy with her boyfriend, her life and her future.

But that was before she met Patrick Henley.

“Trick” blurs the lines between what Cami wants and what is expected of her. He’s considered the “help,” which is forbidden fruit as far as her father is concerned, not to mention that Trick would be fired if he ever laid a hand on her. And Trick needs his job. Desperately. His family depends on him.

The heart wants what the heart wants, though, and Trick and Cami are drawn to each other despite the obstacles. At least the ones they know of.

When Trick stumbles upon a note from his father, it triggers a series of revelations that could ruin what he and Cami have worked so hard to overcome. It turns out there’s more to Trick’s presence at the ranch than either of them knew, secrets that could tear them apart.
