Three years ago, Amber Benedict fell in love with Kale Riker and pledged to wait for him to return from military service. Even though she rarely hears from him, she’s steadfast in her belief: he’s coming home to her, and soon. Then the government tells Kale’s family that he’s missing in action, and the Rikers have given him up for dead. Now the entire town is set on convincing Amber to let go of a dead man and move on.

Amber is certain Kale is still alive and on his way home, but can she hold out against an entire town pushing her to give up on love?

My Thoughts

This is a great holiday novella. No one has heard from Kale in six months, and three months ago his parents were told he is missing. The whole town has given up hope of Kale returning, but Amber refuses to believe it. She is convinced that he will come home even when everyone tells her to give up or gives her sympathetic looks. Even his parents are trying to move on. I thought this was a sweet and touching story about love and hope.

Amber is a sweet girl. We learn about her and Kale's past and how some of their holiday traditions have started. Such as the week before Christmas dinner at his parents house. Amber owns her own little shop in town and is close with Kale's parents. Her best friend is her cousin Rina. While everyone else has given up hope of Kale returning, Amber refuses to believe he can really be gone. You can tell how much she loves him. You can feel her aching need for him to be there with her and you can also feel her anger at everyone for giving up hope, especially his own parents. It takes her a while to understand that it hurts more to hold on, then to let go, but she's not ready to let go yet.

We go through the week and also get to go back to memories from the past few years. A polar plunge, her and Kale playing Santa and an Elf, and dinner with his parents. We get a feel for the sweet relationship they had and it makes you want so badly for a Christmas miracle of them being together. When everyone has lost hope, it's hard to hang on, but love is a force stronger than anything. This short story packed a lot of emotion, but was sweet and touching! Though I read it during the holidays, I think it's a fantastic quick read for any time of year.

Book Trailer

What do you think of the trailer? Well, I also have an excerpt for you if you aren't convinced.

Excerpt 1

Kent stretched languidly as he drifted out of sleep the next morning. He’d gone out with Rich for a few more beers after they’d dropped off Roni’s stuff, but he didn’t feel any worse for it.
He slowly opened one eye, happy for the blackout curtains he’d hung in his bedroom.
He was not a morning person.
He glanced over at the clock, his forearm brushing against the empty sheets next to him, and he wondered how long it had been since he’d had a woman in his bed.
Shit, at least since Roni had come to town and squatted in his house. Well, now that she had moved out and he had his space back, he would have to remedy that.
His mind wandered to Briana, and he wondered how she was doing in Austin. He couldn’t help but smile.
Although he was sad that she’d taken Colin back and had moved away, he couldn’t help but be proud that she’d followed her dreams.
He could think of her now without feeling sad. He knew that she’d never really been his to lose, but he’d still felt bereft when she’d told him she didn’t want to see him anymore.
He wasn’t na├»ve enough to think that he’d loved her, but he knew that he could have, if she’d given him the chance.
“Oh, well,” he thought as he pushed himself up in the bed and threw his legs over the side. “No use wishing for something that was never going to happen. Time to move on.”
He sat still for a moment, allowing himself time to wake up, before standing up and heading into the bathroom to take a shower.

Weekly Recap/Stacking the Shelves (36) eBooks Galore!!

*Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews

Hey everyone!! Hope you all had a fantastic holiday!! Mine was really great. The kiddo was super excited this year about Christmas since she understands it now. She was so happy to see the presents under the tree in the morning and that Santa ate the cookies she left out for him. We spent a lot of time with family and I was exhausted for days after, but I love this time of year. I am not linking the book titles or my weekly recap stuff because I am trying to be on a blogging break and failing at it. I am just going to put this post together quickly. So really I didn't take much of a blogging break at all, but I just didn't have many reviews go up.
(I apologize for the shakiness and blurring in the vlog. My camera can't keep up with fast movement and I was trying to rush.)
This is me opening my package from Eileen! I promised her I would record it so she could see my reaction.

Review: Suicide Watch by Kelley York

  • Publisher: CreateSpace
  • Publish Date: December 20th 2012
  • Source: eBook provided by the author for review
Purchase: Amazon | Smashwords

18-year-old Vincent Hazelwood has spent his entire life being shuffled from one foster home to the next. His grades sucked. Making friends? Out of the question thanks to his nervous breakdowns and unpredictable moods. Still, Vince thought when Maggie Atkins took him in, he might’ve finally found a place to get his life—and his issues—in order.

But then Maggie keels over from a heart attack. Vince is homeless, alone, and the inheritance money isn't going to last long. A year ago, Vince watched a girl leap to her death off a bridge, and now he's starting to think she had the right idea.

Vince stumbles across a website forum geared toward people considering suicide. There, he meets others with the same debate regarding the pros and cons of death: Casper, battling cancer, would rather off herself than slowly waste away. And there’s quiet, withdrawn Adam, who suspects if he died, his mom wouldn't even notice.

As they gravitate toward each other, Vince searches for a reason to live while coping without Maggie's guidance, coming to terms with Casper's imminent death, and falling in love with a boy who doesn't plan on sticking around.

My Thoughts

This book... wow guys!!! Seriously. I am just trying to figure out how to collect my thoughts and voice them to you here. I am a huge fan of Kelley York. Her writing is fabulous and she brings so much feeling and emotion to the characters and story that it's impossible not to get totally lost in it!! The tragic beauty that this book captures left me with a tear streaked face, but a smile and a sense of hope. When a book can bring out such powerful emotions, that makes it so amazing. This sounds like a book about wanting to end your life, but really it's about learning how to live. There is so much pain and anguish, but also a lot of love and a light at the end of the tunnel. I think that Kelley York captured this perfectly!

Vince is a lonely broken soul. He has been thrown from home to home after his parents gave him up for adoption when he was a baby. He has only ever really had one friend, and she seemed to turn her back on him and move on when he moved away with Maggie. Maggie is the only one who has actually wanted him and kept him. She saw a future for him and wanted him to succeed. When he loses her he doesn't know what to do. Is suicide really the best option? Would it be easier to die rather than spend each day being sad, angry, or lonely. The thing that he doesn't see that others do is that he is much stronger than he thinks. When he forms a friendship with Casper and Adam through this Suicide Watch website he second guesses things. Now that he has people to care about and to care about him, is suicide really what any of them want? When he was lonely and had no one to miss him, it didn't seem to matter if he was gone, but knowing there is people to miss him makes him feel like he can't hurt them by doing that to them.

Casper and Adam are both really awesome characters too. I love that Kelley York doesn't just make us feel what the main character feels, but makes us love the other ones as well. I felt like I knew them. I was sad watching Casper waste away as the cancer kills her. Adam is just so sad and lonely. His mother doesn't even notice he's around. It's like he is invisible. Adam and Vince have that in common. Not feeling wanted and feeling alone. Casper has a loving family, but she still feels alone because she has pushed away all of her friends and her boyfriend. She doesn't want pity. She just wants a normal life and to not have to be stuck inside, to be able to eat without being sick, to do what normal people do and not be staring death in the face. She also really wants for Adam and Vince to live and experience their life. They aren't unfixabe like she is and she wants for them to explore their future. They are all brought together through a site where people plan their suicide, but what they find in each other is a reason to live.

Deeply emotional, heartbreaking, but also beautiful and uplifting. This book was filled with so much beauty and hope underneath all of the sadness and tragedy. It is about them discovering themselves. Wanting to help not only themselves but each other. Learning that just because someone may not appear broken, it doesn't mean they aren't suffering on the inside. It shows the lengths people are willing to go through for the ones they care about, and not give up even when it seems like the easy way out. It's realizing that you care enough about someone to notice when something isn't right. It's about saving the ones you love and excepting the sad truth about ones you can't save. These characters will work their way into your heart and leave a lasting impression. This book was just incredible!

Top Ten Books in 2013 I'm Pining For

This event is hosted by Jessica from Confessions of a Bookaholic, Rachel from Fiktshun, Jaime from Two Chicks on Books and Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads. Today is the last day of the week long event and the topic is top ten books we are looking forward to in 2013. There are so many. This list was probably the hardest one yet!! In no particular order I give you my list!

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices #3) by Cassandra Clare

OMG I love this series!! I could seriously read these books over and over again. (And I did re-read Clockwork Angel before Clockwork Prince came out and will re-read both before this one comes out too.) I have never ever been so torn between a love interest. Seriously!! I mean I totally love Jem, but I love Will too. They both would be awesome for Tessa for different reasons. No matter how things end up I am going to be broken I know it. I don't see how she can choose one or the other. I can't wait to see how everything all ends! I think I might die of anticipation!! March seems so far away!

Boundless (Unearthly #3) by Cynthia Hand

I never expected to love this series so much and I am totally pining for the third and final book! Dude!! Clara is at college. With Angela. And Christian... I'm totally Team Tucker BTW. There is no changing my mind. After reading Radiant and getting a glimpse into what happened over the summer in Italy, I am even more excited to read Boundless. Luckily it's only a month away!! Yay!! And, I'm so going to the Dark Days event in Cambridge in February and I get to meet the mastermind behind the series!! SQUEE!!!

Requiem (Delirium #3) by Lauren Oliver

If you have read the first two books you know why I am going crazy needing this one!! If not, you should go get the first two books now. No wait! Get them right before this comes out on March 5th so you can read them back to back, unless like me you are a total sucker for cliffhangers and you love the agonizing torture that the wait for the next book brings. I don't even know myself how I want this one to go. Well, I guess I do, but I'm still confused. I should really read this now so I don't keep beating myself up over it.

With All My Soul (Soul Screamers #7) by Rachel Vincent

This is one of my favorite series so naturally I can't wait for the final book!! After how Before I Wake ended I have been practically pulling my hair out wanting this book. I don't want the series to end, but I am excited to see how Rachel Vincent finishes it all up for us. I know it will be fantastic though. All great things must come to an end so this book will be bittersweet, but I need it!!

Apollyon (Covenant #4) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
(And Sentinel, Obsession, and Origin. How about just all of JLA's books that come out in 2013. I know that's totally cheating, but whatever!)

I have major love for this series and things got a bit crazy at the end of Deity. And talk about torturous cliffhanger!! I just about threw the book across the room, then screamed into my pillow! Then I read Elixir and that has pretty much made this wait unbearable already. April needs to get here soon!!

The Collector by Victoria Scott

Have you been to the Dante Walker website? Have you heard about all of his awesome?!! Yeah, He's going to be one of those bad boys I totally swoon over. I just know it!! This book sounds awesome and I can't wait to get my hands on it!!

Dare You To by Katie McGarry

I freaking loved Pushing the Limits and I am looking forward to more of Katie McGarry's writing! This book sounds like it's going to be fantastic! It's Beth's book and I really want to know more about her!! I really liked the little bits of her we got in Pushing the Limits so getting her story is going to be awesome!!

Just Breathe (Just Breathe #3) by Kendall Grey

If you have seen my lists this week you already know the love I have for this series so it's no surprise that this is one of my most highly anticipated books of 2013! I am so invested in the characters and the story and I want so badly to know how it ends!!! I know that S%*# is going to get crazy in this last book, but hopefully there will be a great HEA for the characters who deserve it. (Scarlet can go jump in a lake and die a painful watery death!!)

Prodigy (Legend #2) by Marie Lu

Legend was fantastic!! As soon as I finished it I immediately wanted the next book and OMG guys!!! It's almost here!!! Cannot wait to get my hands on Prodigy!!! I feel like I have been waiting forever for it!!!

Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer

Cinder was one of my favorite books of 2012 so of course I am dying to read the next book in the series!! I am curious about the new addition of characters and where the story in general is going to go. I loved everything about the first book and I am sure I will love this one too!! The anticipation is killer!!!

I do of course have honorable mentions:

(ones I don't have, but would do anything for)
Fuse by Julianna Baggott
Divergent #3 by Veronica Roth
Vortex by Julie Cross
Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi (I'm meeting her in Feb too!!)

(ones I do have so it doesn't really count)
Everbound by Brodi Ashton (I get to meet her in Feb too, can you tell I'm excited about the Dark Days event?!!)
Taken by Erin Bowman
Hysteria by Megan Miranda

Cover Reveal: Sworn to Raise by Terah Edun

Hello everyone! Hope you have all had a fantastic week. I have a pretty cover reveal for you today, courtesy of  Xpresso Book Tours. Sworn to Raise by Tereh Edun

Sworn to Raise by Terah Edun (Courtlight #1)
 Publication date: March 15th, 2013
Seventeen-year-old Ciardis has grown up in poverty, a cleaner in a small vale on the outskirts of the  kingdom. But beneath her kingdom’s seemingly idyllic surface lies a hidden secret. Whispers of an inept crown Prince are growing ever louder—intensified by the five year anniversary of the soulbond  initiations.

Amidst scandalous whispers, Ciardis finds herself chosen to train for the Companion’s Guild. She leaves her home and sets off on a personal journey to become a Court Companion. A position she’d never thought possible for a lowly servant to obtain, she must prove that she has the skills to attract a Patron.

But she must master those skills quickly. If the legends are true, only Ciardis can harness the power to raise a Prince in an Imperial Court sworn to bring him down.

This sensational series debut melds intricate storylines with remarkable characters and unforgettable magic. Sworn To Raise is ideal for fans of Kristin Cashore, Michelle Sagara, and Maria Snyder.

Cover designed by Kalen O'Donnell Cover Designs

I really like the colors of the cover and the background is so pretty. It sounds interesting too.

Top Ten of 2012: Best Book Boyfriends

This event is hosted by Jessica from Confessions of a Bookaholic, Rachel from Fiktshun, Jaime from Two Chicks on Books and Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads. Today we are talking Book Boyfriends! OMG this was hard. There are just so many swoon worthy candidates that I was having a hard time choosing. Like all my other lists, they aren't in any particular order. I am just doing the book cover for the book or series they are from instead of trying to find/make Team Whoever badges. I'm not super good at that stuff so it would take me forever.

Daemon Black from the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Okay, so I didn't use the book cover for this one, but I still had this fabulous badge from when he was in the YA Crush Tourney and I had to use it. He started off as a tool in Obsidian, but he has more than proved himself as the series has gone on. And in Opal!! OMG he totally melts my heart over and over again!

Aiden St. Delphi from the Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout - He has had my heart from the very beginning and he just proves time and time again how amazing he is!! He is so sweet and will do anything in the world for Alex!!

Jack from Everneath by Brodi Ashton - If you haven't read this I don't really want to say much, but just how devastated he was and what he is willing to do to keep her makes my heart flutter. He is too good to be true!! I suppose that's what is so appealing. :)

Gavin from the Just Breathe series by Kendall Grey - He's a rock star, super hot, and super sweet. He's terribly broken, but is coming around and he will do anything for Zoe. Yes, he effs up more than a few times, but he is just yummy and awesome!!

Tucker from the Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand - I am Team Tucker all the way. No matter what anyone says you can't change my mind. He is one sexy cowboy and he knows how to have fun. He doesn't need any special talents to be incredibly irresistible. He is amazing just how he is.

Finn from Inbetween by Tara Fuller - Talk about super sweet!!! Finn has literally been waiting for Emma for a long long time. He knows he can't be with her, but he can't stay away. He will do anything he can just to be with her. He is the broken, but sweet and charming type. I am totally a sucker for the broken guys that need some good TLC and love to be fixed.

Noah from Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry - Now talk about broken guys!! Noah is totally broken, but underneath all of that he is incredible. His younger brothers are his world and he will do anything to make sure they are safe and happy. He wants to make sure they have the best life they can. The chemistry between him and Echo is amazing, but really, what makes him desirable is how dedicated he is to his family and their future.

Sam from Flawed by Kate Avelynn - As hard and heart breaking as this book is, Sam's love for Sarah is the bright light in the darkness!! It makes your heart ache. It's beautiful, but so tragic. The love that Sam and Sarah share makes and otherwise unbearably harsh book a little easier to read.

Sawyer from The Vincent Brothers by Abbi Glines - Dude, I thought I loved Beau (Which I totally do), but OMG Sawyer surprised me in this one. Holy hotness. I was not expecting that out of Sawyer who seemed so reserved and perfect. He was on fire in this book and I couldn't get enough of him.

Tod from the Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent - Dude, Tod is just freaking awesome. The things he will do and go through for Kaylee!! I love Tod. I don't want to go into all the reasons, but really, in my opinion he can do no wrong. He is good down to the core.

There are a few honorable mentions that I have to add:

Adam from Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Luke from Beg for Mercy/Waiting for Mercy by Shannon Dermott
Sam from Incarnate by Jodi Meadows
Jace from The Mortal Instruments series (He wasn't fab in City of Lost Souls, so he didn't make the top, but he's still awesome so he needed to be mentioned.)
Chase from The Protectors series by M.R. Merrick
Logan from The Witch Avenue series by Karice Bolton.

I would love to know who your fave book boyfriends are. If you did a post leave me the link, if not let me know in the comments.

Top Ten of 2012: Best Sequels of 2012

This event is hosted by Jessica from Confessions of a Bookaholic, Rachel from Fiktshun, Jaime from Two Chicks on Books and Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads. Today the best of 2012 topic was blogger/readers choice and I chose sequels!! Some of the best books I read this year were sequels and this is the only reason I was able to keep my first best books of 2012 list down. Once again these aren't in order, they are just my top favorites.

Pandemonium (Delirium #2) by Lauren Oliver - If you have read this you know what I am talking about!! I know some people were shocked by the ending. I wasn't shocked, I saw it coming, but I was totally caught off guard by how I felt about it! I never thought for a second I would have felt the way I did at the end of that book. Oh, and way to leave us hanging!! I am so glad that I have Requiem (Thanks HarperTeen & Edelweiss) because I couldn't stand waiting until March! The wait already has been torture. Will be reading Requiem very soon.

Siege (As the World Dies #3) by Rhiannon Frater -  This is the third and final book in the series. I loved them all, but by the time I got to this one, I was so invested in the story and the characters. This book made me cry the ugly cry!! I was whimpering and holding myself with a box of tissues in my hand. Talk about a fantastic ending to a series though!!
*This cover has also had a makeover for the mass market paperback that comes out in April 2013, but this is the one I have so this is the cover I used.

Onyx (Lux#2) and Opal (Lux #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout - (I only put the Opal cover though) It's no secret I am a huge JLA fan. I loved Onyx like you wouldn't believe. I liked seeing the newer side of Daemon and the story progressed to a new level of awesome! Well, in Opal, I love Daemon even more. Yes, it is possible. Opal is probably the most swoony, quote worthy out of the series so far. I highlighted every other page in my nook!! And that ending!! I wanted to scream and yell and throw a tantrum. I'm so glad that we only have to wait until July for Origin, and even that seems too far away.

Tempting the Player (Gamble Brothers #2) by J. Lynn - This is an adult contemporary romance. Not YA, not NA. Just in case... Wow, I thought I liked Chase in Tempting the Best Man, but Chad is just oozing sexiness in this. I loved reading his story and seeing if he could be tamed. We still get some of the characters from TtBM, but it's not necessary to read that one to enjoy this. I highly suggest it though. It just adds to the awesomeness, and that one is amazing too.

Before I Wake (Soul Screamers #6) by Rachel Vincent - I know this is the 6th book in the series, but I consider anything after the first a sequel. I read the first few books in this series before I started blogging, and I think I read the 5th book right when I started. All of the books in this series are "must read the second it comes out" books to me. I love Rachel Vincent's writing, I love her books!! I can't get enough!

Exhale (Just Breathe #2) by Kendall Grey - Wow! That is all I have to say about this series. I loved Inhale, I loved Exhale, I am dying for Kendall to finish Just Breathe!! (You hear that Kendall!!) This is also an adult series. It has bad language, hot sex, and all that! This one steps things up a lot from the first book and OMG that ending. I wanted to tear someone apart! I was crying and angry at the end of this book. This is another one of those examples where you are so connected with the characters that you feel their emotions with them.

Release (The Protector #3) by M.R. Merrick - The books in this series are almost non-stop action. The characters are all wonderful, the plot is amazing, and the visual imagery is fantastic!! Each book gets better and better! Though, this was the first book in the series that I found myself mad at M.R. Merrick at the end. I wanted to throw my nook across the room. I am eagerly awaiting the fourth and final book in this series.

Hallowed (Unearthly #2) by Cynthia Hand - I am not a big fan of Angel books. Very few have actually kept my interest and made me pine for the next book. It's not to say there aren't ones that I like because I can name plenty, but I don't tend to read them. Now this series is among one of my favorites!! I love the writing, I love the story, and I am not at all bothered by the love triangle. I actually like it! (Though I'm Team Tucker all the way!!!) These characters have worked their way into my heart and I can't wait for Boundless to see how it all ends! (Please pick Tucker!!)

Pure (Covenant #2) and Deity ( Covenant #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Oh how I love this series!! Aiden melts my heart. Seth makes me want to stab things, and Leon and Alex make me laugh so hard!! I don't even know what to say except I just love these books!! I pretty much just fan girled in my reviews. I get so caught up in the story that I read and read and don't even realize how much time has passed or what is going on around me.

And that is what I have. I know there's only 9 covers, but I figured since I kinda cheated with the JLA books I should stop. That's not to say that I didn't love some other sequels too, but those are my tops!!!

Top Ten of 2012: Best Book Covers

First I want to say Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate it!! I hope you have a fantastic holiday!! Jessica from Confessions of a Bookaholic, Rachel from Fiktshun, Jaime from Two Chicks on Books and Mindy from Magical Urban Fantasy Reads are hosting this week of great Top Ten lists!! Now onto the post topic. Today's Top Ten is Best Covers of 2012 This was a hard one since there is so many fabulous covers from this year. There are so many stunning covers that I will probably think of ones I would have added after the fact. Like with yesterday's post, these aren't in any particular order. (When I tried to link them they went all over the place anyways so even if there had been an order it would have been ruined.) All the covers link to Goodreads.

  • Release by M.R. Merrick - I love all the covers in the series, but this one is just fantastic. All the covers are symbolic of the books and I love that!!
  • Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin - I am a sucker for red and black and this is just really pretty. I love the typography too.
  • Everneath by Brodi Ashton - Love how the dress turns to smoke and she's walking in the smoke. I also really love how you can't see her face.
  • Incarnate by Jodi Meadows - The colors and the butterfly are just so pretty!!!
  • Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake - If you think this book is gorgeous on screen, you should see it in person!! So, so pretty!! She is a bit glossy and then the rock bits look like they are really flying at you.
  • Crewel by Gennifer Albin - This cover is just so cool looking. At first I didn't even realize that was a girls face in the corner, I just say the pretty colors and swirls lol!!
  • Elixir by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Yes, I know this is a novella, but it's still a book cover, and it's absolutely gorgeous!! So simple, but so beautiful!!
  • Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff - Again, I love red and black. The typography is great and how battle ready the girl looks... just awesome!!
  • Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor - Do I even have to explain? Seriously, just look at that!! It's amazing!!
  • Neverfall by Brodi Ashton - This novella comes out tomorrow and it may be one of my favorite covers ever!! I pretty much just love everything about it!!
  • The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandana - I know this is number 11, but I had to!! This is another one that is significant to the story. I love that you can see the two cityscape's in her silhouette.

I apologize for the formatting. Blogger hates me and won't just put the pics where I want them.  Really, I don't know why The Lost Girl wouldn't go into the row above correctly, but whatever blogger! You won't best me in getting my post up!!
So what do you guys think of my picks!! If you notice I have a thing for red and black. :) What book covers did you absolutely love this year? I could have put at least 10 more, but I had to contain myself.
