**This novella takes place after Everneath. If you have not read Everneath, do not read the synopsis or review as it will contain spoilers for Everneath! (I have made the text of the synopsis a close match to the color of the block quote, if you want to read it just highlight it)

A thrilling new novella from the author of the Everneath series!

Jack is trapped for eternity in the Tunnels while Nikki has managed to evade Cole's grasp . . . for now. But Cole is more desperate than ever to find answers about Nikki, his best chance for taking over the throne of the underworld. How did she survive the Feed? Can Cole find another Forfeit like her who can survive it too?

Cole's quest leads him to the other side of the world, to a mysterious, dangerous society known as the Delphinians, whose price for information might be higher than Cole can pay—a price that could destroy Nikki. But when Cole attempts to steal the answers instead, his mission ends in disaster. Faced with centuries in a Delphinian dungeon, Cole is confronted with questions he's been too scared to ask himself: Is he really obsessed with the throne—or is he obsessed with Nikki? And can she really give him a new beginning as the Everneath's king . . . or will she instead bring about his tragic end?

My Thoughts

I first have to address the fact that I am indeed Team Jack, and you can't change my mind. I didn't really like Cole that much in Everneath, and I was hoping maybe he would redeem himself to me in Neverfall since it's told in his POV. Not so much. I am still Team Jack. As with Everneath, this novella goes back and forth from past to present, and I really did love getting to read some of those scenes in the past in Cole's POV. This novella was a great way to hold us off and keep us happy until Everbound comes out, and gives us a look into the way Cole thinks.

There is a lot more to Cole than meets the eye. Yes he is still manipulative and I can't really get past that, but besides that, Nikki has really gotten to him. She is much more than just a Forfeit to him. He also knows that she is different. She survived the feed where others can't and he needs to know why. He is determined and does some really, really stupid things. He literally travels across the world to get information on how Nikki survived, and how he can find another like her. The closer he gets to the knowledge the more he realizes it's not someone like her he wants. It is only her.

This was a great novella, and a pretty decent length too. I did like getting to hear things from Cole himself, but honestly, the selfish, manipulative side of him is definitely there. I don't think he deserves Nikki, but I can't help to feel a little bit bad for him. He isn't supposed to have emotion so it's got to be very different for him. This has made me very excited for Everbound now and I need to read it ASAP. If you are looking for something to wet your appetite for this series, definitely pick this up. It is a wonderful way to bridge the gap between books!!

    1. I'm a huge fan of novellas!! I love when we get more of a story especially if it's from a different perspective. I still don't like Cole, but at least I understand him a little more.

It's interesting that this novella helps you get to know the bad guy more even if he's still selfish and manipulative.

    1. Haha! I started reading Stolen Nights and felt the same way. I read Infinite Days forever ago when it came out so it's been a long time. I am starting to remember now though as I read more.

  9. I read this one so long ago that I really can't even remember who I liked better between Jack & Cole. But from the way you describe them, it was probably Cole, I always fall for the asshole, sad but true. I should really read this before Everneath comes out, I think it would be a good refresher going into the second instalment.
