Book Girls Don't Cry (4) - Negative Reviews

Hello my lovelies!! This weeks BGDC topic is how we handle writing negative reviews. I actually was really quick with my vlog for once, so you don't have to listen to me babble on and on for days!

We will be posting as follows:
Jenni @ Alluring Reads - Mondays (YouTube Channel)
Giselle @ Xpresso Reads - Thursdays/Fridays (whichever works best) (YouTube Channel)
Amy (Me) @ Book Loving Mom - Saturdays (YouTube Channel)
This weeks posts from the other BGDC girls:
Negative Reviews

How do you feel about negative reviews? Leave your thoughts in the comments. Also don't forget, if you have a topic suggestion you can fill out the form in the Book Girls tab!  :)

  1. I wish I could be better at abandoning books earlier on. I usually push through most of the time which is why I've been forced to write quite a few negative reviews in the past. I agree though, negative reviews shouldn't be disrespectful or specifically target the author. I always try to find something nice to say about the book too if I can. :)

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    1. I didn't used to be, but with the ridiculous amounts of books on my TBR I make myself be. I figure why read something I'm not enjoying? Though, sometimes I think I feel abandoning guilt, but not guilt over writing a negative review.

  2. YES, I agree! I usually don't finish books I hate too, unless I have to for a blog tour or a review book, so then I'll be like "I should probably get this done" but otherwise I'm like "EFF THIS!" Which probably isn'tthat good a response....Whoops!

I also am TOTALLY with you about the tagging an author! If you write a negative review it's pretty much a review for all your readers to look at and nobody needs to rub it anybody else's face right?

Amazing post Amy! :D I need to start watching these more I'm always so LAZY. Gack sue me.

    1. Haha!! I totally think that eff this is a great response and I don't blame you for not watching. I usually go on and on for like 10 minutes. I can't shut up lol!!

  3. Funny you should have this up today. Autumn and I got a couple of nasty comments about a book we reviewed together. We were very, very honest about our feelings. But we didn't even mention the author. We were accused if being bitter and jealous. Umm...we're not authors. No jealousy here. And you know, I bought this book, I can say anything about it I want. This isn't my job,it's a hobby.

So yeah, I agree w/you on everything. Sorry about the rant, luv!

    1. I saw that comment on Autumns blog! I almost replied, but thought better of it. It's not worth it to engage with when obviously they just want to stir up trouble. I thought the chat review was great, and you girls weren't disrespectful at all. You never bashed the author in any way, you just didn't care for the book very much. Big deal.

  4. I'm like you, I usually don't finish a book if it's not going well. Although I always feel awkward when I'm on a blog tour and didn't like the book and have to talk to the organizer.

    1. I know, that's awkward when it's for a tour, but if you don't like it it's not your fault.

  5. If I don't like it or can't give it a 3, I generally don't post a review on the blog, BUT I do post on Goodreads, Amazon, and BN.

  6. Fabulous vlog discussion girl! I've only written a few negative reviews since the blog went up...I tend to only read books I'm fairly sure I'll love so that helps. I definitely didn't twitter tag authors when I did write a negative review haha that would be odd! And like you I tend to give up on the book if there are no redeeming qualities to be seen! Uhm, as for DNF's I don't post full reviews, just a little paragraph explaining why it's a DNF for me...usually they only go up on Goodreads. I love how you mentioned humor as a good way of dealing with having to write a harsh review :)

  7. I'm like you and don't have many reviews that are negative because I'm incredibly impatient. If I don't like a book I just stop reading it. I occasionally have a 3 star review, but even that isn't real often. I'm not against negative reviews either, it's just about being respectful, like you said.

  8. Great video Amy! I basically agree with everything you said. I actually used to try to finish every book even if I wasn't enjoying it but since I don't have much time anymore, I will just not finish it if it isn't a review book. I'm pretty good though about doing a lot of research before I commit to buying a book but it still happens. I definitely think that negative reviews need to stay respectful. I always try to point out what I didn't like but what others might like. I also especially agree with not tagging a author on twitter when it is for a negative review.

  9. I rarely have to do negative reviews as well because just like you if I'm not really liking the book I don't continue to read it.

  10. I feel bad giving one. It's like I want to like all books but it will not happen that way. Still, I know I need to be honest.

  11. Totally agree with you. I tend to also link to someone who did like it because like you said not every book is for everyone. So I find someone who does like it. I don't feel guilty either. I always try to be respectful and say why it didn't work for me. No guilt there.

  12. aww you look so cozy! Love it!

I'm like you, definitely pretty quick to DNF so that saves me from having to do a lot of negative reviews. Life is way too short to power through books you don't like.

I agree that being respectful is HUGE.

Totally the same in trying to mention what I did end up liking about it! We are so alike!

  13. I used to finish every book that I started. But a few years ago that ended. I can still count on two hands the books I haven't finished...so if I read and I have alot fo say about it - I will write a review. I try not to mince words because then I feel like that is just censoring yourself because you don't want to be offensive. I don't flame but I'm not going to sugar coat it. Plus someone else out there probably loved it. One would hope haha.

My blog is now an award free zone. I really appreciate the thought, but stopping by is reward enough for me. Thank you so much!!

I have been getting a ridiculous amount of spam comments so I have disabled anonymous comments. If you are an anonymous user and a real person, I apologize.

I love comments! I will try to respond to as many as I can. I read every one of them, even if I do not respond to them all.
