it's almost

time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

My Thoughts

I love Tahereh Mafi's writing style. I just have to start with that, because it seems so unique and odd, that it could easily have put me off, but I really just love it. It makes me feel like I am really in Juliette's head. I love that she is unsure, and rambles, and second guesses. The writing style really brings that out and I think it really adds to the overall awesomeness of the story!! This book gets more intense as a war is looming between the resistance and the Reestablishment. I enjoyed every single moment of it!!

Juliette is still a character that is very unsure, very afraid, and honestly still feeling sorry for herself and not thinking about the bigger picture. I like her, I really do, but sometimes I just wanted to smack her and shake her and tell her to stop being such a baby about things. She does grow a lot in this book, but it took a lot of pushes and mistakes to get her there. I am glad that she finally comes to her senses and becomes the person that they need her to be. She has a phenomenal power, but she is so scared of it and herself that it takes a lot to get her to start to know how to use and control it. But when she does, you can really see the change in her.

Now I will get into the love triangle of this. You are being warned, there will be ranting!! Okay, so I will start with Adam. He is sweet and caring and obviously loves Juliette. The only problem is, that things are not quite that simple between them. Now that she knows more about her powers, she is still afraid to hurt him, but he is insistent that they can make things work. Sounds sweet right? Well, it's not. It's nauseating. He pretty much stares at her with puppy eyes, begs, pleads, whines and cries. Oh yes, he is like a heartbroken teenage girl begging to be taken back and it's pretty pathetic. I still do like Adam and I understand he's hurt, but dude needs to not be so sensitive like it's the biggest tragedy in the world.

Then we have Warner. I really feel bad for his life situation, and for some reason Juliette actually makes him seem kind of human. He actually does care for her, but that doesn't change that he still doesn't care about anyone else and he is still a psychotic murderer. I don't believe he will change and he pretty much makes it clear that he won't. I do believe that he might love Juliette, but beyond that, he wants her for the power she has, for the power he thinks she can bring him. He still wants to be in control and has no remorse whatsoever about killing innocent people. He is selfish and brutal and I don't believe anything, even Juliette can change that. Is there more to him than meets the eye? Definitely! Do I think that really matters? Not at all.

I loved where this one went and I really liked how much Juliette was able to change and grow in this. She is a much stronger person than in Shatter Me and she is determined to do what she needs to do. I loved that she finally breaks out of her shell. We get to know what goes on in Omega Point, we see the battles, and we learn some secrets! This had more action, more suspense, and some pretty great sexy times!! I read a lot of adult books, so the famous chapter 62 didn't have the blushing affect on me, but, it was pretty hot! ;) The overall story progression was awesome, and the way this one ended has me needing the next one now!!

And I know I barely ever use quotes, but I have one from each of the boys that I really enjoyed!! (I am leaving out the page numbers these are from so to not clue you in to where in the book either of these are from.)

"You." he says to me, his hands gripping me tighter now, "are one of the bravest, strongest people I've ever met. You have the best heart, the best intentions - " He stops. Takes a tight, shaky breath. "You've been through the worst possible experiences and you survived with your humanity still intact. How the hell," He says, his voice breaking now, "am I supposed to let go of you? How can I walk away from you?"

"I want to be the friend you fall hopelessly in love with. The one you take into your arms and into you bed and into the private world you keep trapped in your head. I want to be that kind of friend," he says. "The one who will memorize the things you say as well as the shape of your lips when you say them. I want to know every curve, every freckle, every shiver of your body, Juliette - "

  1. I feel like Tahereh's prose got so much better in this book! It's so unique but really intriguing. But the love triangle–gah. I find Adam really boring and really lame, and while I do feel sorry for him I think he needs to just suck it up. I actually love Warner unlike you, but I definitely see your point. And Juliette's character development was also really great. I feel like she evolves a lot in this book! Lovely, awesome review. xxx

    1. I love the prose! I think it really gives you a feel for Juliette. OMG Adam drove me friggin' crazy in this book. Juliette definitely grew a lot in this book. Kenji and I hate to say it, Warner, were a big part in that!

  3. I just skimmed your review because I do plan to read this series eventually, but I am happy to see that you enjoyed this one so much! I am so damn curious about this chapter 62 that everyone has been tweeting about so I want to get started on this series soon. Happy you loved it!

    1. Haha!! I read a lot of adult books so I don't think that chapter 62 had the same affect on me as on other people. It's a pretty hot scene, but not even close to some of the things I've read. ;)

  4. Ooh so excited for this sequel I really have to get it stat! I'm glad that Juliette has some good character growth I found she was a bit out of it in the first book--that was her character though so I'm not saying it was a bad thing, but not sure how it would have worked out in the real world where she's supposed to be a badass superhero or something. I also really enjoyed Tahareh's different stykle of writing but what I wasn't a huge fan of was the striked out thoughts. I'm glad that went away after the first half of book 1 I'm hoping this one is not filed with them!?

But anyways it sounds like a great sequel and that's exciting! :D

  5. You and I felt similarly about Warner. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Chapter 62 made me cringe more than anything though, I have to admit. :P Juliette frustrated me a little during this book, too, but I was happy with the progression she eventually showed.

    Great review, Amy!

    1. I was happy that she finally great too. I was very frustrated with her for a lot of this too. I wanted her to stop feeling so sorry for herself and look at the bigger picture. Good thing Kenji was there to talk some sense into her.

  6. I was disappointed that we had less Adam and what we did get of him was kind of whiny Adam. I still like him though. But I also like Warner. I know, he’s bad and not just a bad boy but a really bad person but I still think him and Juliette are perfect for each other. Because let’s face it, she’s not right in the head either! But I also like Adam. And Warner. Can you tell I’m conflicted?
I loved this book and I LOVE the writing, great review!

    1. I do like Adam, but he really bothered me with the whining. Haha I totally agree that Juliette is definitely not right in the head. Maybe they do belong together, but it doesn't mean I have to like him. ;)

  7. Aaaaaand...the whole Adam/Warner thing is why I don't want to read this anytime soon. I loved Adam so much in book one. It almost seems as if Mafi is writing him as annoying to make Warner more palatable. And that won't work for me!

Crap. Now I'm ranting. And I'm sick.

Great review, Amy. It really made me smile.

    1. Haha!! I still think you will like Adam in this. He just lets his oversensitivity get the best of him. You can tell how much he really loves Juliette though.
Awww, that sucks you are sick, I hope you feel better soon!!

  8. I skimmed your review since I plan to pick this up soon (though you know how that goes since I spoke about it on my blog today) but I have been told this is good (and your rating is good!) and I just don't want to go in expecting anything. I'm so glad you enjoyed it though! I AM going to read it soon! Really!

  9. Uggh! Wasn't Juliette the most frustrating character ever? Thank goodness for Kenji! I think Mafi made her seem like such a weak character on purpose. Then, we can see and appreciate her growth. I DESPISE the love triangle in this book, not because I dislike love triangles in general, but it's boggled me how the author made Warner, a psychotic murderer who apparently feels no guilt whatsoever, a love interest. No, I don't care that he loves Juliette, he's a murderer and a murderer always stays a murderer!
I do agree about Adam acting like a puppy in this one. He was such a swoon-worthy guy in Shatter Me, but he drove me nuts in this book. I really enjoyed this book even though the characters drove me crazy. Kenji is what got me through it all! And of course like you mentioned, Mafi's writing! It was so gorgeous! :)
Brilliant review, Amy! I'm glad that you loved it so much! :)

  10. I don't know if I should read this review because I haven't read Shatter Me yet and don't want to be spoiled, but I'm going to be a rebel and read this review anyway. Because that's just how I do. I'm such a rebel. *giggles*

I'm so glad to hear that you love Mafi's writing style! The snippets I've read intimidated me a bit, but I'm really hoping it's better when in context and not in snippets. Her writing is a bit too flowery and over-the-top for my taste, but I appreciate how it's like that to emphasize Juliette's mental stability, which is a really clever and unique concept of prose. I'm also glad to hear that Juliette grows as a character in this one, even if she might be a bit frustrating. Frustrating characters are... well, frustrating, but if it's intentionally so then I find a way to deal with it. If it's not intentional and I just hate the character and find him/her annoying when I'm not supposed to, that's obviously when I take issue with it. And ick--this love triangle, particularly with Adam, sounds quite nauseating. Though I'm really looking forward to meeting this mysterious Warner. I know so many of my friends hate him, but he sounds like such a complex character, and I hear many people love him in this one. I can't wait to see what I think of him! Great review, hon!

PS: Where have you been on twitter?! I've been missing you!

  11. You are so talking me out of reading this one. I love Adam and I don't know if I want that ruined. Great review.

  12. DUDE I'm so glad you loved it! Seriously, Adam was a little whiny and Warner was kind of humanized, but I still don't like him better than Adam. Now as soon as Adam can man up and put on his balls we'll be good to go!

YES to Juliette! She was so annoying sometimes and I was like "AHH JULIETTE PLEASE STOP!" When Kenji started screaming at her that pretty much made my life. I even took pictures over and over again of the pages ;P

Amazing review as always! I totally am in love with the quotes too. Makes me want to buy a finished copy and hide from the world so I can reread Unravel Me :D

  13. As you know I've been debating about reading this series so I *had* to check out your review on this one. On the one hand I tend to feel like you mention in the beginning: like the writing style in this one is very hit or miss and I feel like it will be a miss for me. The way neither boy in this triangle seems overly appealing to me kind of makes me more wary...but then those quote you put at the end are absolutely lovely!! I also like how Juliette seems to be evolving nicely, something I look for in series'. Another GREAT review girl,I may just have to check this series out eventually!!

  14. Yep, Juliette needs a good smacking. She's hiding too many things from Adam (um, chapter 62?) and that is going to come back and bite her in the next book. Thank goodness for Kenji. I was cheering him on all the way.

  15. Great review and you picked a great quote! I definitely love the way that Mafi writes too! I loved Shatter Me but I admit I have not finished Unravel Me yet. I'm actually enjoying taking my time with this book and only reading a couple of chapters at a time. I'm so torn over Warner/Adam though.

  16. Dude! Yes, can you say Stockholm syndrome! Gosh, this book made me so crazy with emotions!!!

  17. Haha, aw. Its because of how "end of the world" it seems to Adam over losing Juliette that makes me feel for him. I'm so Team Adam still and Idk why, but that part of him is what makes me love him so much. Don't get me wrong, he does bother me sometimes, but I'm still all for him & Juliette. I love how you point out each of their flaws too and I completely agree about Warner. Yes, their love is nice, but that doesn't mean he'll change for her or that they're epically meant to be together. I was also a bit disappointed in Chapter 62. I think they hyped it up too much. I definitely love those quotes you picked! Swoon! Great review babe!
