Book Girls Don't Cry (7) Books to Movies

Hello!! Can you believe this is the seventh week of Book Girls? It doesn't feel like that many! Anyways, this week the topic was book to movie adaptions chosen by Kezia of Pansycake Reader. With so many books being made into movies and with so many coming out it seemed like a good topic to talk about.

We will be posting as follows:
Jenni @ Alluring Reads - Mondays (YouTube Channel)
Giselle @ Xpresso Reads - Thursdays/Fridays (whichever works best) (YouTube Channel)
Amy (Me) @ Book Loving Mom - Saturdays (YouTube Channel)
This weeks posts from the other BGDC girls:

What movies do you think are winners and losers for book to movie or even books to tv series? Let me know in the comments.

Harry Potter except for #5
The Hunger Games
The Princess Bride

Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief
Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 (Well, all of them really)

What I'm looking forward to

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
The Host
The Dome TV series
Deliruim TV series

I mentioned some other books and movies too, but I forgot already lol!

  1. Selena is going to be in 13 Reasons Why? I really liked that book and we've already established how much I like everything she does, even if that "Springbreakers" movie looks hella intense.

I can't wait for City Of Bones. I also really like Lily Collins!

I also really liked The Hunger Games and Princess Bride (which is also one of my personal favorite).

Best book to movie I've seen in the longest time is Warm Bodies! Everyone needs to read/see that!!!

    1. I have heard that Warm Bodies is really bad, the book and the movie. Even being a big zombie fan I never really had a desire to read or see it.

  2. I think The Host looks incredible. I loved that book! Princess Bride is a win. I actually le the Twilight movies, for the most part. I'm looking forward to TMI, but I don't think I'll ever believe JCB was the right choice for Jace. We'll see....

    1. The Host was an awesome book!! I love The Princess Bride!! I like the Twilight movies, but they are totally cheesy. I just think that certain aspects were really hard to transfer from book to film so it made a lot of stuff just kind of lame. I admit I'm a Twilight fan girl though. I like the books and I like the movies, I just don't think the movies were good adaptions of the books.

  3. I hated the Percy Jackson adaptation, it is one of my favourite books so I was so pissed *sighs angrily*
The book to movie one I'm most looking forward to is def. The Book Thief and City of Bones! EEK! Thank you for sharing Amy :)

    1. The Percy Jackson movie was so different from the book. They obviously just wanted to try to make it appealing to the audience they wanted and didn't care about sticking with the book very closely.

  4. I am really looking forward to The Host movie. I got my husband to watch Hunger Games, and he actually liked it. After I watched it the first time, I told him about Rue and how I cried. He asked me if it was bad enough that he might get teary eyed. Man, I love my husband. :)So now that I put all his business out there. lol I am going to have to find some the movies you talked about. Great post.

    1. My hubs liked the arena stuff, but he thought in general it was too slow. I get where he's coming from. He's an action movie person and not patient enough for an actual storyline lol!! I am looking forward to The Host. I really hope they do the book justice. I loved that book.

  5. OMG, ok everything you said about Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince movie is spot on for me. The book is one of my absolute favorite ones in the series. I was beyond let down by how they made a teen romantic comedy out of it. AND that scene a the Burrow was pointless and even a little cruel to be honest. Not to mention everything they changed! But then again, I started getting a bit ranty with movies 4 onwards cause of all the stuff they had to cut out, I mean books 4-7 are all pretty big. Like you though,I think Prisoner of Azkaban is the best film out of them all ♥ SO accurate, I wish that director had directed all the rest!!

So...enough Potter rambling lmao. I did love the Hunger Games film too, the bf enjoyed it quite a bit and the poor dude suffered through all the Twilight films multiple times for me so I can see why HG was so refreshing for him haha >.< Agreed on Percy Jackson. I'm also super excited about The Host, and even TMI (even though I didn't love the books) but I think it looks like they're doing a really brilliant job adapting it!

    1. In general HP was done awesome, but 5 really made me mad. I think that TMI is going to be really great. From the stills and the trailers I have seen I am super excited. I think The Host looks like it's going to be good too.

  6. Great topic! I was sad about the Percy Jackson movie. Sigh.
I need to read the Host, and fast!!!

  7. I really did enjoy the Hunger Games movie! I thought it was well done and followed the book will. And you can't deny Jennifer Lawerence is such a good actress! I really need to read The Host and see what that's all about. And I'm still looking forward to the City of Bones, even though I'm not a huge fan of the guy that plays Jace...

    Lovely v-log, Amy! <3

  8. I don't watch a lot of book to movie movies but I liked The Hunger Games and I'm looking forward to The Host. I agree the Twilight movies were pretty bad. I'm pretty curious about Delirium becoming a Tv show. I hope it doesn't get canceled before anything interesting happens!

  9. I love watching how enthusiastic you get in your vlogs! I love The Princess Bride movie too, although I haven't read the book, and I think one reason it's so good is that the author of the book also wrote the screenplay.

In general, I feel like with both movies and TV shows based on books, a lot of time the screenwriters/developers change things without a good reason, just b/c they can and they think they many people are involved in making a movie, it often ends up a case of too many cooks spoil the meal, so it ends up not being that good. This happens in books too, especially since YA is getting so commercial, but especially in movies, it's all about pleasing EVERYONE, being so constantly ENTERTAINING and reaching the broadest audience to make the most MONEY...and it often ends up hurting the movie. That's just my grumpy two cents!

  10. I totally agree about The Lightening Theft. It was such a great book and such a terrible movie.

I'm really looking forward to the City of Bones movie but I'm worried. I so love that series and if they ruin it, I'm gonna be pissed.

  11. I had to keep telling myself not to even think of the book while I was watching The Lightning Thief because it was so different. I thought The Help was a good movie adaptation. I love The Princess Bride- but I have never read the book. I must fix that asap!

  12. The Hunger Games (so far) have definitely been great! I haven't read the book yet, but from a movie stand point I really like the Percy Jackson the movie. I thought The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was a good adaption, but Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader left out and changed so much. I never read it and don't plan on reading it, but I am looking forward to the Host movie.

  13. Not sure if you're interested in manga series, but I wanted to let you know that they did a manga series that was a sequel of sorts to "Labyrinth". It was called "Return to Labyrinth", and was 4 volumes long. You might want to check that out.

  14. Delirium is going to be a TV series?!?! Wow. That I can't wait for either.

After we all posted I totally thought of The Wizard of OZ, how the hell could we all forget that. We fail!

I totally agree that The Hunger Games was made of win!

I never read the Harry Potter books so I can't comment on those.

  15. The Princess Bride!!! LOVE! I agree about Breaking Dawn too, but that wasn't a fav book of mine.

  16. I agree that some movies just don;t make it. At all. Like they totally forget how to capture the book. And too bad too cause the books are good. I'm excited to see Mortal Instruments!

  17. Alright, I really don't like the Harry Potter movies, just because they were SUCH a let down to my childhood self. The Hunger Games was badass and The Princess Bride will ALWAYS be one of my favorite movies.

    Have fun storming the castle!
