Book Girls Don't Cry (10) All About Book Covers

I love this weeks topic. It's about how a book cover affects our opinion of a book. Whether or not I will pick up a book or if a book cover doesn't go with the book. I will give my thoughts. No vlog this week since I don't physically have a number of the books I will be talking about.

Don't forget to check out the other Book Girls posts from this week!

The ones with gorgeous cover that failed for me.

Mind Games by Keirsten White - I just couldn't connect at all, and all the back and forth between characters and the past and present with no logical order to it was annoying.
Unspoken by Sarah Reese Brennan - I feel like I am the only one who didn't like this one. I ended up DNFing it actually.
Level 2 by Lenore Applehans - I got a bit ranty on GR about this one.

Covers that don't fit the content (not to say I didn't like them)

Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand - Clara has blond hair. The cover model does not. I know it's not a big deal, but sometimes that stuff bothers me.

Death and the Girl Next Door by Darynda Jones - Okay, this is stupid, but the lockers. They are yellow right? Well, in the book it's said over, and over, and over (I'm not exaggerating) that they are red, RED! Enough said.

And how many covers have girls in a super pretty dress, and it has nothing to do with the book. I don't think that half the time the character even wears a dress.

Books that the cover is gorgeous and the book lived up to it!

The Infernal Devices series by Cassandra Clare - I love the covers, love the story. Just love!
Crewel by Ginnifer Albin - This book was so cool and the cover fits!
Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin - Gorgeous cover, awesome book!
The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith- The cover is totally cute and romantic just like the book.
The Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Besides being pretty, each of the covers' flowers coincide with a flower that is mentioned in the book. How's that for significant!!

There are also books with not so appealing covers that I really enjoyed, but I can only think of one right now and that's The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I loved this book, but I only read it after it was already out for a while and I heard it was good. This cover did not scream to be read at all to me! The good thing is, everyone has different tastes, and not everyone is a total cover whore like me. Lol!!

So what are your thoughts on covers. Let me know in the comments. And as always, we are open to topic suggestions.

  1. The Infernal Devices - my cover obsession starts here. Literally these are one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen. I also like Covenant covers, but I'm not a fan of Deity's cover. This is .. I'm not even sure what it is. I just don't like that one in particular. Unspoken is so gorgeous! Love that one. Mind Games has a great cover, I agree. Oh, and I also like Ten by Gretchen McNeil, Starcrossed series' covers, um.. Mara Dyer covers are great. That Bitter Angel cover you featured. I agree that Unearthly is somewhat random. These little facts bother me as well when it comes to covers. AND yes, HG has a pretty awful cover, but the book itself is fucking awesome! I don't think I would have picked it up in a bookstore with that particular cover if I hadn't know about the hype before, but I'm glad I did - one of the best reads ever for me. LOVE your choices, girl!

    1. There are so many awesome covers!! And right?! The Hunger Games cover did nothing for me. Actually I think the first time I ever saw the book I thought it was a book about some starving country or something, and didn't bother to pick it up to read the back. Lol!! That's one of my favorite books though, so I am glad that other people didn't mind the cover and got the word out about the awesomeness!

  2. Those are some great examples. All of Clare's covers are extremely gorgeous. You should see Suzanne Johnson's Sentinels of New Orleans covers, she has the same cover artist. Statistical Probability is another great example.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    1. I really love Cassandra Clare's covers. The Mortal Instruments have great covers too!

  3. I really dislike it when they put things on the cover that are very different from in the books. The color of the hair is a big one though I didn't actually catch that on the Unearthly books.
Love the Infernal Devices covers! LOVE!

    1. I get so annoyed when things on the book cover don't match things in the book. It's one thing to have a random scene or the typical girl in a dress or something, but hair color or ethnicity or things like that bother me a lot.

  4. Mind Games! Just seeing that cover brings up bad memories of the content of the book.
There are just so many books with the covers that are gorgeous but the content isn't as good.
I don't like the cover of Death and the Girl. It looks like a really bad photoshop job. >.<
I love the covers for The Infernal Devices. They match and they are absolutely unique and stunning. I also like how matchy the covers of The Covenant series are.
    Great post, Amy!

    1. Yes, there are lot of really great covers and the books are not great. It's so sad when you are super excited about a gorgeous book, but what's inside makes you want to chuck it across the room!

  5. Honestly, I first picked up Clockwork Angel for the cover alone! I mean I was reading Clare's TMI series at the time so it wasn't an 'unknown' book... but those covers are just SO gorgeous ! I definitely agree with you on the Covenant Series, amazing covers, amazing goodness inside :D

Masque of the Red Death, I love that cover but man that book was a letdown for me :( And you`re right the HG covers aren't anything special or amazing...definitely not books you'd pick up to cover-lust about.
    Fab post girl!!

    1. I love Cassandra Clare's book covers. They are so pretty!

  6. I do a lot of reading on the go, so I have an issue with the covers that you don't want to carry around in public. Like the ones with half-naked people on them or the ones that look like a book that a twelve year old would read. But that could just be me...

  7. I hate when books with gorgeous covers end up to be disappointing. It's like, why waste all that skill to make an awesome cover just for a bad book? ;) Although, I can't believe you didn't like Unspoken, Amy. I'm pretty sure you're the only one out there that didn't like it. ;)

I also dislike when book covers don't match up with the book, like in the case for Unearthly. It really messes up my perception of the characters and the book in general. I love when book covers actually match the book inside.

    Awesome post, Amy!! <3

  8. Great examples Amy. I have to admit that I am a "cover girl." Unless someone has recommended the book to me or I am familiar with the author, if the cover doesn't grab me, I usually don't go any further. There are also those with great covers that weren't that great to. Great post.

  9. OOH I do agree with the Covenant! Although my interest for that waned a little bit during Apollyon, I have to agree Covenant has one of the BEST covers I've seriously seen! It's just amazing and I never got the flower connection actually until now!

OMG I HATE when covers aren't consistent because my OCD takes over and all of a sudden I'm just twitching like crazy because I need them to be consistent and I'm just thinking, "You couldn't Photoshop it a little to have the right hair or...I don't know...CHANGE the color?" Because unless it's a MAJOR point in the plot, I don't see the harm in changing the lockers to yellow or something like that >.<

    Great post, Amy! :)

  10. Must agree with all your choices up there! Nicely done.

  11. Covers do affect my initial opinion. I loved being surprised by books with not so great covers though! I like all your covers picks.

  12. Giselle didn't like Unspoken either. I'm sad that you didn't. It's one of my favorite books. I love the wit.

I love the Half-Blood series covers. They are simply amazing. And they are some of the most memorable covers I have seen.

If the lockers are red in the book, then they should be RED!!

  13. The infernal devices has the best covers. So filled with some many things you just want to step into the cover.

  14. The Mind Games cover was such a freaking trap. If I made a list of those covers it would be a million miles long. Sigh. I'm so easily fooled. Also of ones that don't make sense with the cover.

Mostly, I don't think we have the same cover taste, but I do like the covers for Masque and Statistical Probability, and they do work with the books inside so well!

  15. Another for me was Black City by Elizabeth Richards. It's one of the most beautiful covers I have seen and I couldn't even get half way through the book! So disappointing. I love the Divergent covers and how they are actually extremely relevant to the content. The Infernal Devices covers are seriously so gorgeous. I have them faced on my bookshelf just so I can always see them.

I hate when covers don't match, so upsetting!

  16. I am obsessed with pretty covers. One that I disagree with you on is Unearthly. I find the covers to that series go perfectly with the books. To me the model looks like she has blonde hair. Not bleach blonde. But definitely blonde. I think those covers are actually prettier in person. There are so many textures and silver shine. Plus the books are awesome.
