He’s arrogant, domineering, and... To. Die. For.

Hunter is a ruthless killer. And the Department of Defense has him firmly in their grasp, which usually doesn’t chafe too badly because he gets to kill bad guys. Most of the time he enjoys his job. That is, until he’s saddled with something he’s never had to do before: protect a human from his mortal enemy.

Serena Cross didn’t believe her best friend when she claimed to have seen the son of a powerful senator turn into something... unnatural. Who would? But then she witnesses her friend’s murder at the hands of what can only be an alien, thrusting her into a world that will kill to protect their secret.

Hunter stirs Serena’s temper and her lust despite their differences. Soon he’s doing the unthinkable—breaking the rules he’s lived by, going against the government to keep Serena safe. But are the aliens and the government the biggest threats to Serena’s life…or is it Hunter?

*This is not a YA book. It is adult and has some very adult scenes in it.

My Thoughts

Another fantastic book from JLA! The Lux series is one of my favorites, so I was so excited to hear she was writing an adult book from the Arum side of things. And oh, man was this good!! Holy freaking hotness!! Hunter is the bad boy to the core, but he's still oh, so good!! And of course Serena has an awesome amount of snark that we know the author writes so well!! This was all sorts of awesome. It had my adrenaline pumping, laughing out loud, fanning myself, and swooning hard! The best part? Dual POV's!!

I will start with Serena. She is snark times twenty. She doesn't take crap from anyone, and the more you tell her to do something, the more she will fight it. Piss her off, she will throw things at you. Really though, she has just been taken away from her life and is now being protected by an alien. He infuriates her, and gets her all hot and bothered. She is very impulsive, doesn't listen well, and is stubborn as hell, but I totally loved her. She is also fierce and totally loyal to doing the right thing, even if it means putting herself at risk to do it.

Hunter is fan-freaking-tastic. Oh, my yum!!! Okay, so he's an ass, really he is, but he is a sexy, hot ass who is every bit as alluring as he is aggravating. He is seriously sex on a stick. He knows what he wants and he goes for it. Okay, so besides his deliciousness, he is badass. When things get complicated, he will go against everything to protect Serena. He finds that he is starting to care for her and when she is at risk he goes into super scary Arum mode!! He is a bit off putting at first, but since we get his POV too, we learn that he's not as much of a jerk as he comes off as... most of the time.

Besides the sexiness of this book, my favorite thing was the familiar characters from the Lux series. We don't get a whole lot of them, but it was nice how it ties in. Also there are little bits that give some insight into where the Lux series is possibly headed. It makes me super nervous and really excited at the same time. We learn a little more about the government and how they tie into things, and more about the history of the Luxen and Arums from the Arum side of things. Through the Lux series the Arum have always seemed liked the bad guys, but I think I may be having a change of heart. Not to say I don't like the Luxen, but things are definitely not good/bad for me anymore. I think it's all about the individuals.

This was super awesome. It was such a fun and sexy book. You don't need to have read the Lux series to enjoy this as it's just set in the same world, and adult. If you like books that bring on the steam, the laughs, the frustration, and adventure, this is definitely one to read! This was everything I was expecting and more. I want more of the adult part of this world!!

  1. Jennifer L. Armentrout books are taking over my life. I mean, how many books has this lady written? I NEED TO READ ONE SOON! Sometimes, rough and snarky main characters work for me.

Lovely review, Amy! Glad this one was no disappointment. <33

    1. This is very much an adult book. It is set in the same world as the Lux series, but it is not in anyway YA in nature. I know that you are a bit younger so I just wanted to throw out that warning for you. :)

  3. This sounds like a winner! I haven't read the third book in the LUX series-Opal-so I was wondering if I could just read this, and you answered my question. Thanks for sharing that it can be read as a stand alone. Hunter sounds YUMMY! Fab. review, as always.

  5. I wasn't sure what to think about this and your review cleared up my questions. Snarky headstrong characters can make or break a book for me. Sometimes they just annoy me, other times I just adore them. So that might be a slight concern. But I'm sure I will give this one a shot!

  6. I've read the first two Lux books, but I don't really remember anything about Arums. The story does sound cool and the characters seem fun. And I do like a fun amount if snark, but an overly snarky character/s drives me crazy. Hopefully Serena won't. Glad you enjoyed Obsession so much!

  8. Man, Jennifer Armentrout really needs to get you to write the blurb for her books, Amy! Your enthusiasm for this is totally infectious, hah. "Sex on a stick," huh? Don't mind if I do. ;)

  10. Hmmmm I was worried that not having read the Lux series (I KNOW!) that I'd miss something... :(

  11. Okay, Serena sounds like the type of character I'd pretty much adore. I'm definitely the type of person to throw things at people when they piss me off. (Just ask my husband.) Am also relieved that she's not immediately okay with being held captive by an alien. BELIEVABLE CONFLICTS, WOO! Not sure if I'll adore Hunter quite as much though as I don't exactly love the ass love interest thing. Glad to see you loved this one so much, though! (Would you believe I still haven't read anything by Armentrout yet?)

  16. I honestly love dual POVs so much, it's hard for me to get into a romance book if it isn't dual POVs. I also loved that you see some Lux series characters too. That was pretty cool. And yes, Hunter is sex on a stick!
