All’s fair in acting and amore…

Brynn McAdams isn’t the awkward drama geek she was in high school—she’s grown up and confident, or at least she likes to think so. But when her old crush, the impossibly handsome and impossibly unattainable Sawyer Raines, comes back to town to direct her community play, Brynn finds herself determined to be someone other than the girl he doesn’t even recognize. Good thing she’s an excellent actress.

After his bad breakup in NYC, the last thing Sawyer wants is to get involved with another actress. But the glamorous and beautiful Brynn draws him in, even though as her director, he knows she’s off-limits. There’s just something about the woman that feels…familiar. Like home.

As Brynn’s lies start to snowball, she struggles to stop acting and come clean. But what if Sawyer is already falling for the fake Brynn, not the Brynn she truly is?

My Thoughts

I love the Bliss imprint because the books are so fun and sweet. I also really loved the first book in this series, Falling For Her Fiance, so I was super excited to read this one! Unlike that one where the couple are best friends and end up falling in love, in this one Brynn had had a crush on Sawyer in high school, but he didn't know she even existed. She has a lot of pent up hate for him for unintentionally breaking her heart back then. In fact, he doesn't even know that it's her in this book for most of it.

Brynn I had a hard time liking. I get that she had been hurt and that she is really insecure, but I couldn't get past all the lying and how she gets so mad at simple things that he says even though it's not like he's trying to say things to hurt her feelings. She never even tries to consider the fact that maybe he's changed from how she thought he was or maybe he really wasn't a bad guy like she thought. I felt like she was so caught up in herself that she didn't even want to know anything different from what she had set in her mind. I thought that as things progressed she would finally open up, but she just keeps lying and it really irritated me. Yes, in the end she finally wants to come clean, but to me it took way too long and I lost a lot of respect for.

Sawyer was very normal for a book guy. He wasn't the bad boy, he wasn't the super broken and needing to be fixed guy. He was just a guy with normal issues that make it hard for him to want to let anyone in and commit to a relationship. He's had his share of heartbreak and humiliation too, and yes, he let's it rule his life to an extent, but not as bad as Brynn. Also, he never lies to her about anything. He may not tell her everything, but those are his personal things that have nothing to do with her. He is still himself and never tries to be someone he's not. I really liked Sawyer because he was so real. He was just overall a great guy who is trying to overcome his past and move on.

This romance kind of drove me nuts. It's so back and forth and Brynn really made me want to scream. I could totally understand Sawyer's frustration and confusion over things. It was obvious that they cared for each other, but it was hard for me to want it to work when from Brynn's side it was all based on lies. She should have realized early on if she had just come clean about the lie, Sawyer would have understood. Yes, they were sweet together, but I couldn't fully invest myself into them. I honestly thought that Sawyer deserved better than someone who could keep lying to him, even if I understood why she thought she had to. Once they started to get close that should have been the time to tell the truth.

I did really enjoy the story in general. Despite the few irritations with Brynn, I thought this was a sweet romance. I also really enjoyed getting to see some of the characters from the previous book, especially Wes and Dani! Though there were things that I didn't like about this book, it really was a great read. I will definitely continue to read anything that Cindi Madsen writes and can't wait for more from this great author!

  1. Brynn's attitude didn't really bother me, I just felt she got too caught up in a situation that she didn't know how to handle. I was so happy to see Wes and Dani in this book, too! I'm really excited about the next book!
    Glad you liked this one.

  2. Huh, these books look interesting but I'm not sure I'll end up reading them. Brynn doesn't sound like someone of like easily either- and what's up with the name? Awfully strange. But Sawyer sounds cool. For once it isn't a dark and mysterious or funny dude- just a normal one.

    Brilliant review, Amy! <33

    1. I think that most people who have read it don't mind Brynn. I totally get why she was the way she was though. I just couldn't necessarily connect at all.

  3. I need to try a couple of books from this line, but this one is not going to be one of the few I try.
I can already tell from your review that this book will not be for me. It would drive me crazy how Brynn would lie non-stop and will only come clean at the end of the book. Romances that go back and forth also frustrate me, so yet another element I would not enjoy.
Anyways, thanks for the honest review, Amy!

    1. I think you would love the first one, Falling for her Fiance!! That one was so fun and sweet!

  4. I totally get what you mean about not being able to like a character because it seems they are so caught up in the past. That always drives me crazy, I mean I think everyone in the freaking world knows that we are not at our best in high school, so as adults things are so different. I'm happy that you were able to like this one overall though!

    1. I guess I just thought she should be able to get over it by then. They are both adults and have obviously changed. That's why it made me so irritated that she was so set on keeping it from him.

  6. I liked this one. Maybe because high school sucked for me too and so I didn't really get upset that they were focused on it. It's a cute story.

    1. I think maybe that's why it was hard for me to connect. I loved high school so I never had any feelings of wanting to hide my high school self when I grew up.

  7. Eep, I love companion books in which the characters from a previous book show up, like in Second Chance Summer (the cuteness!). But anyways, Brynn definitely sounds frustrating. I don't like characters that continue to lie upon lie, honestly. I wish they would just come clean and get the romance over with! ;) But Sawyer definitely seems very real, which is always great to see.

Ah-mazing review, Amy!! This is one I may just have to pick up. <3

    1. I think that she just got so lost in the lie and couldn't figure out a way out once other things started to complicate it. I loved Sawyer though!!

  8. I liked Sawyer too. I thought this one was cute, but I liked Dani and Wes just a little more.

  9. I haven't tried the Bliss imprint yet but they sound so sweet and cute! I'm not totally sure about this one though I have a hard time with back and fort/hot and cold relationships, so Brynn might make me pull off a few hairs haha. Glad you enjoyed it, muffin! So jealous you saw RDJ GAH!!

    1. There was a reason for the hot and cold thing, but it just annoys me. I am totally impatient lol!!

  10. AHHHH I hate when you can't really like the main character Brynn does sound like someone who would be so intensely infuriating, but also romance that goes from "I love you, I hate you" within seconds is also impossibly impossible. But, I'm glad that Sawyer was real and a lot more likable than Brynn.

    Fantastic review, Amy!

  11. You read the book I snarked twice. Haha.

Brynn sounds like a piece of work. I have that problem a lot in fiction. Characters lie so much and won't fess up, and it makes everything needlessly complicated. Plus, by the time they're honest, I know I wouldn't forgive them.

Oooh, a normal, nice guy? What is this magic? At least it's the guy settling for a bit of a jerk for once.
