Blessed by the very gods who have abandoned him and carrying the fate of all the worlds on his shoulders, Chase Williams is about find out just how much one man can endure.

My Thoughts

How do I even begin to explain my love for this book? No, not even this book, but the series in general. Not being a huge reader of fantasy, this whole series has just blown me away. This book? OMG it was so amazing! As sad as I am to have the series now over, it has been one heck of a ride. This book follows the pattern of a lot of action, high intensity, and overflowing emotions. I was so tense and almost brimming with tears for the majority of it, and I wouldn't have it any other way! I loved everything about it!

Chase is really hurting in this one. He has lost a lot along the way, and he feels like he is failing everyone who is there for him. He went from not giving a crap about anything, to having people to care about, only to worry about losing them and whether he is doing the right thing, or if he is strong enough, or good enough to end what it turning into a war. He is in a dark place for most of this book, but with the help of the people who care about him, and other unlikely people, he is able to believe in himself because they do. He still can't let go of his guilt, but he learns to not let it own him. I really love who he has become since the beginning of the series. Even though he really took a bit of a step back for a while, he has grown into such an amazing person who is worthy of being The Protector.

The other characters, just like with the first three books, are very important too. They still play a huge part in everything, and I love them all so much. Even Vincent who I love to hate.Timani became a huge inspiration in this one. He has always had wise words, but they seemed to mean so much more in this one, and once you've read it, you understand what I mean by that. Grams is of course still a mean old hag, but I can't help but love her. She is very cut to the chase and not beat around the bush type. She is hilarious and awesome! I loved so many of the others, but of course Rayna is my other favorite. She is the one person who is able to keep Chase from caving. She saves him from himself like no one else can.

Yes, there is romance, but it's not a focus of the book at all. Being that this is the fourth and final book it's an important part to the story, but I love how it's taken this long to really build up and get to the point that it's obvious that they need each other and care about each other very much. Not that I doubted it would happen, but Chase and Rayna really take their time with their relationship and it seems so much more real. And they also know that there are other much more pressing matters and have put their personal lives on the back burner. I loved how they both grew as people, and grew into their relationship along with that. This is how you do a great relationship!!

This was such an adventure. At this point in the series, the situation is pretty bad and you know that this is it. I could almost feel the tension and urgency while reading. My heart felt like it was in a  vice grip, and my eyes were seconds away from spilling tears. Those tears made their way out a few times. I felt every bit of emotion from the first chapter to the last. I have loved getting to know these characters and share their journey. I am sad to let them go, but M.R. Merrick left the book with a great resolution, and what I think is pretty much the perfect end to an amazing series!!

  2. I seriously need to get to this series because I've heard nothing but good things about it. So many readers love it and I know that I will too. Plus, I'm a huge fan of YA fantasy. I love the sound of the characters and the romance. Especially the romance. I'm sure it feels realistic since it took the entire series to develop.
I'm happy that this ended beautifully for you, Amy!

  4. It is so great that the series has wrapped up so well. And it's also good to know that even though Chase & Rayna's relationship wasn't the focus on the story, that there is a strong connection.fabulous review, Amy!
