Book Girls Don't Cry - What I Like (and Don't Like) To See In A Blog

Hello everyone!! Another week, another fun topic!! This week we discuss what we like to see in a blog, or in my case, what I don't like lol!! I did a vlog, but the sound is all effed up so I'm not sure if it's really watchable or not so I will write a little thing too. Ugh! So frustrated. I really thought my cam was working right and it wasn't.

Other Book Girls Posts

(And OMG both of them switched to Wordpress and their blogs look so nice!)

Okay, so I will start with the things I like to see on a blog.I think the best way to do this is bullet points.

Things I Like
  • Clean looking and organized
  • Social- I like to see that you comment back or interact with your readers.
  • Personality - I love to see your personality show through in your posts!! It makes it so much more fun to read.
  • Social Icons that are visible - If they are hard to find I won't search for them.
Things That Turn Me Off
  • Light fonts on dark background - I do have a few favorite blogs that are like this, but it does hurt my eyes and it's hard to read.
  • Bright or flashy blogs - If your blog is so intense it hurts my eyes, I'm not likely to stay or come back.
  • Tours or giveaways that have ended - If you have a giveaway that ended a month ago or a blog tour, you should probably remove it from your sidebar. If I am part of a tour that goes past the date of my stop, I will usually keep the banner up for the duration of the tour, but not after.
  • Noisy - I don't like when people have music players going. I love music too, but I can't listen to a song and read. Also, sound effects on widgets! The Bane Chronicles one that makes the whooshing sound scares me sometimes.
  • Moving background - I know that some people find it cute or charming to have falling snow or something, but my stomach would be much happier to not deal with the motion sickness it gives me to try and read while the backround is moving.
  •  I'm sure that there are more, but at this point I am flustered and sick of trying to do this one post. I love my new laptop, but I'm not loving the video issues, even using an external webcam. What are your thoughts? Let me know in the comments. Also we are always up for suggestions!

  1. I'm not too picky and I love seeing blogs all different unique ways but I also have sensitive eyes so the only thing I want is for the font to be big and easy to read and not too bright a color. Also that the social icons are at the top and easy to find but when they are at the bottom I usually find them eventually.

    1. The bright colors are the worst. They give me such a headache! It won't stop be from going to a blog unless it's really ridiculous though.

  2. Readability - I have to be able to read the text. I hate neon colors. I hate backgrounds that can potentially induce seizures.

No content - If you don't have anything to say, don't say anything. I hate to read posts that I've seen on 5 other blogs. I'd much rather you'd skip a couple days and produce a well-thought out post, then 5 days in a row of blitz stuff.

On a side note, I hate giveaways that require a blog comment, unless it asks me a question. I don't want to spew out "thanks for the giveaway" like 100 other people. I like to leave thought out comments or none at all.

    1. Lol!! Seizure inducing backgrounds are no good!

Oh I didn't even think about the content thing. I don't mind seeing blitzes or cover reveals, but I do agree that if it's the only thing posting, it's a bit boring.

Hmmm good to know. I never really thought about the leaving a comment thing for a giveaway that way. Mine are usually part of a post that has a review or something so I figure that people will just comment on that.

  4. Oh man sound effects suck. I hope my blog doesn't hurt your eyes! Wait, blogs have moving backgrounds? Yikes.

    Great post, Amy! <33

    1. Your blog is fine. :) The blog post part isn't too dark against the lighter font so it's easy to read. It's mostly white font on black background that is hard for me. And yes!! Some blogs have backgrounds that snow or falling leaves or something!! OMG it's horrible and makes me nauseous.

  5. Long story showt, I agree with everything you said. I always get the creeps when that Bane chronicles widget is on some blog I visit.. It just scares the shit out of me most of the time.

    1. OMG if my volume is way up that Bane Chronicles widget is so freaky!

  6. OMG Yes to that Bane Chronicles widget whoosh sound! It scares me every time I go on a blog that has it! >.<

I'm don't usually have problems with blog designs, but unreadable tiny little fonts with absurd colors are a big no-no for me. I hate it when bloggers use cursive handwriting and I have to struggle to figure out what's written.

I haven't seen any blogs with moving backgrounds yet and I hope I never do. Even if I do, it's something I would immediately close!

    Great post, Amy!

    1. The cursive is hard to read too, but as long as it's a bigger font it's not too bad for me. I didn't even think of that though.

    2. I hate cursive font too, especially when it's yellow or baby blue. Gah, people need to call the design police for emergencies like that.

  7. Oh my biggest thing I don't like is on your list! MUSIC! Really, peeps? I'm listening to my own music when I visit and I don't want it interrupted. Nuff said.

    1. Haha! Yes!! I mean, I love music, but when I go to a blog, I'm there to read it, not to jam out to tunes!!

  8. I AM SO SORRY THAT I HAVE LIGHT FONT ON DARK BACKGROUND. GAH. *cries*
And, ermm, mine isn't flashy...is it?

BUT YES. The music. GAH. That Bane Chronicles one is SO ANNOYING! Hate it!

    1. Haha! Nikki you are fine!! I love your blog so I don't mind. Besides the font is easy to read, so it's not too bad that it's light on dark. And no, yours isn't flashy. I love your design. I think it's pretty.

  9. I'm not picky, I just figure to each his/her own. But I do definitely have private thoughts about the things I don't like! lol
I'm not at all find of sounds or music on blogs. I always think about the people who are checking blogs at work and get busted like that! And it always makes me jump. One thing that *really* annoys me is the social icons that roll down the screen as I'm trying to scroll down and read. Half the time they cover the text I'm trying to read which completely defeats the purpose! If I want to follow a blog, I can find the icons. That just makes me not want to follow to be spiteful.
Whew! I didn't realize I had so much to say!

    1. I feel so negative. My list of dislikes is so long, and this was supposed to be a post about what we like. The thing is, even if something bothers me, I will still visit the blog if I like the content. Unless it's literally making me ill (like moving background) I can deal.

  10. I don't have speakers so sound doesn't come through for me but I do have headphones plugged in and sitting there and sometimes the music or noisy widgets come through and slightly startle me.
For me the biggest thing is content. I prefer reviews or discussion posts but I know people have lives and cant do them everyday but if I scan through and its all book blitzs and cover reveals on the page I will likely just click away.
I do like bloggers that visit back and I think that's what makes it a habit for me to visit them. Even if one (or both) of us can't visit everyday at least its pretty regular.
I'm not a fan of black backgrounds and I prefer a pretty design. It doesn't have to be fancy but I hate those headers that are so big they fit the entire screen and go off the side. And if you have two sidebars I prefer at least one side isn't as busy. None of this keeps me from visiting if they have good content, but it is my preference.
I think you have a great list!
Oh and yes, keep those icons in an easy to find place! And EVERYONE should have a search bar. If I'm looking to invite someone to a blog tour, I want to see if they've read the book already.

    1. Ohhh I didn't even think about the search bar either. I use it a lot on my own blog, but not necessarily on other peoples. I can see why as a tour host it's helpful though.

  11. LOL -- I also get motion sickness from the falling snowflakes and stuff. Funny, because I don't get motion sickness offline.

I agree with Candace on search bars -- a must.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Jen @ YA Romantics

    1. I never used to get motion sickness except for reading in the car, but after having my daughter I get it super easy.

  12. Music and hard to read font are my two pet peeves. I have to go check my blog and visit the Bane Chronicles to see what ya'll are talking about. :)

    1. I won't not visit a blog because of the hard to read font, but it really is hard on my eyes. The Widget for The Bane Chronicles is so scary sounding if you aren't expecting it. If I go to a blog that I know has it, I know to expect the sound so it's not too bad.

  13. Totally agree. Or having music that is loud. Sometimes I visit blogs at other places I don't like having music play unexpectdly and then I can't find it to shut it off. Other things that bother me is something having their page covered in moving graphics and it takes forever to load. I just click out.

    1. Yes! The long page load time is annoying too. I will wait a few seconds, but if it gets to be too long I won't wait anymore. I visit too many blogs to wait around.

  14. OMG I can't stand music playing on blogs, moving backgrounds or like crazy colours like that clash like if the text is hot pink on a orange background or something...it makes my head hurt and I just can't read stuff like that O.O I had a nice girl who used to visit my blog all the time and EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. I tried to return the visit, her blog was SO packed that it made my laptop crash. EVERY TIME. I had to stop visiting lol -d-oh!

  15. Gah, I went to a blog the other day with music playing. What. The. Hell. I thought we all agreed in like 2004 that auto-playing music on a website was the worst. Get with the program.

Also, the moving things! I remember during the Christmas season, a bunch of people added those stupid snowflakes. Noooooo.

My blog is now an award free zone. I really appreciate the thought, but stopping by is reward enough for me. Thank you so much!!

I have been getting a ridiculous amount of spam comments so I have disabled anonymous comments. If you are an anonymous user and a real person, I apologize.

I love comments! I will try to respond to as many as I can. I read every one of them, even if I do not respond to them all.
