Book Girls Don't Cry - How I Read Reviews

Hello my fabulous readers!! This week our topic on Book Girls is how we read reviews. I think that I am pretty similar to both Giselle and Jenni on how I do it, but I will write up this post anyways lol! And I sucked last week and didn't even link to their posts, so I won't forget this time. (I blame it on puppy brain. Lou has been keeping me very busy.)

Other Book Girls Posts
I have different ways of going about how I read reviews. Honestly, I almost never read reviews on Goodreads, unless it is a book I am contemplating whether to read or not. I do interact with friends on there though, and I read their reviews if they have them posted there before on their blog. I don't tend to comment on GR reviews though.

If I am reading a book or I will be in the next week or two, I usually won't read reviews for it. The exception is if it's on a blog that I visit regularly. I will skim the review to get their basic thoughts so I can leave a nice comment. If I don't want to read it at all, I will just tell them that I didn't read it, but wanted to comment since I visit daily. I will almost never read a review for a book that I am about to write a review for though. I don't want any of someone's thoughts in my head going into it. I want to make sure I have a clear mind, with my personal thoughts only.

I do love reading reviews of books after I have reviewed them though. It's so fun to read what others think of the same book. I like to discuss. I love knowing how one person saw something in it so different than I did, or how similar they think. I think that is the most fun time to read reviews. I admit though, sometimes reading a review of a book that I have coming up to read has saved me from something I probably would have wasted time on and not liked, or ended up DNF'ing. I know what bloggers have similar tastes with me, and if they point out things that didn't work for them, that wouldn't work for me, sometimes it makes me just skip a book and save myself.

I don't really have much to say that my lovely partners in crime haven't yet. I think we all are very similar in how we go about reading reviews. I do think they worded their posts much better than I did though.

As always, leave us suggestions to things you want to hear us talk about. Love you guys!!

  1. I'm the same way--I don't read reviews for a book that I know I'm going to read soon. I do like reading reviews after a read a certain book, though. Thanks for your thoughts!

    1. I think reading reviews after is so fun. I love seeing how different people see things in the book.

  2. I'm the same way. I don't read reviews until after I've read the book and written my own review. I will look at someone's ratings but that's about it.

    1. Yes!! I do look at ratings, especially from bloggers who I am friends with and follow.

  3. Ah! I'm the only one who reads reviews of books right before I read them then? >_> I don't know why, but I always do that, maybe to get a feel for a book? EH

    1. I used to, but I found that it really swayed my opinions going into a book and sometimes made it less enjoyable than it would have been otherwise. Ratings are one thing, but actual words and opinions are another.

  4. I try not to read reviews before reading the book or reviewing them, though I still catch myself doing it on Goodreads. Old habit. Nonetheless, I like going in with a clear mind and to not have specific expectations.

    Fabulous post, Amy! <33

    1. I do still read reviews of books I will be reading soon if it's on a blog that I visit regularly and know they won't have any type of spoiler whatsoever.

  5. I think we read reviews pretty much the sane way. I do love that I have a group of blogs that I visit daily, and knowing their preferences, and mine, helps me determine whether a book is for me.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Amy!

    1. I think that most of us do the same thing, but I know that on certain blogs I can read their review even if I'm reading the book soon and it will be fine.

  6. I'm like you, if I'm about to read the book I don't usually read the review very thoroughly. I just get an idea of their opinion on it. If it's going to be at least a week before I pick it up, I don't stress it cause I forget super fast, lol. I think I read so many reviews they start blending together. I don't read a review for something I'm about to review either, but I usually review the book immediately after finishing it. I am bad about reading reviews on goodreads when I'm just starting a book. I'm not sure why I do that. Often I just scan the ratings to get an idea of who liked it. If it's a book I'm thinking of DNF'ing this sometimes gives me an idea whether I should struggle on.

  7. Like you, I barely read any reviews on goodreads! It's always on blogs! And I never read any reviews of a book I'm planning to start, because I know it would totally affect my opinion on that books! It's great that you already know what bloggers have similar tastes with you, I can see how helpful that can be! Great post!

  8. I sometimes read review on Goodreads when I am frustrated while reading. Usually I'm looking for someone to talk to about the book.

  9. I'd say I skim blog reviews to get an idea of whether the premise/reader's reaction makes the book sound like something I'd enjoy. Then I go to Goodreads, and read reviews by people who like the same books as I do as I'm adding the book to my TBR shelf. I don't read the reviews again until after I've read the book, and a lot of times, the time between adding a book to my TBR and actually reading it is quite long. (So I've forgotten pretty much everything about the book. Which I like. I like to be surprised!) I definitely enjoy reading reviews once I've read the book, however... and commenting, too! (Like, you know, SQUEE moments or ALL THE FEELS or whatever I'm feeling!)

  10. I will skim reviews of books that I want to read or have for review, just to get a feel for a book. However, I only do that with a few trusted bloggers that I follow daily. *wink* Otherwise, I don't read reviews if I plan to read the book. I like have an open mind. Great topic.

  11. I read reviews when I get impatient with a storyline and I;m looking for some sort of spoiler cause I need to know. I also read reviews on books if I'm unsure if I want to read it or not.

  12. Same. I don't do too much GR review reading, unless one pops up on the feed and I'm curious. I prefer to interact on blogs, because the notification system on GR gets old really fast.

I used to do the week or two before and I wouldn't read the reviews thing, but now I've gone to not reading them if I have any plans to read the book later. Though I will look and maybe read if it's really negative, because of the saving myself thing you mentioned. :-p

My blog is now an award free zone. I really appreciate the thought, but stopping by is reward enough for me. Thank you so much!!

I have been getting a ridiculous amount of spam comments so I have disabled anonymous comments. If you are an anonymous user and a real person, I apologize.

I love comments! I will try to respond to as many as I can. I read every one of them, even if I do not respond to them all.
