My Thoughts

I love a good suspenseful book and this one sounded really great. I really enjoyed how the visions seemed to intensify when it got more urgent and how it really reacted depending on how close Jules was to figuring it all out. Another thing that I enjoyed about this book was the family dynamic. The relationship that Jules had with her brother and sister was great. And then there is the whole thing where the boy she has been in love forever belongs to her family's rival! This also touches on mental issues which I thought was a great addition to the story too.

Jules was a character who I really enjoyed. She was flawed in a lot of ways, but it made her very easy to relate to. I loved how her brother Trey is her best friend, and how she will do anything for him or her younger sister Rowan. I feel bad when she starts to doubt her own sanity due to family history of mental issues. She thinks that she might be going insane when she keeps seeing this vision that no one else sees. She somehow knows that it's more than that though, and she really keeps fighting to save innocent lives whether anyone believes her or not. I think she is brave for coming out and telling Sawyer (her longtime love) about it, and her brother Trey. I also think that she is extremely selfless that she is willing to do whatever it takes to prevent the vision from turning out how it's supposed to. Her obsessiveness over Sawyer gets a bit annoying at times, and her little phrase of saying "Oh my Dogs" or "Thank the Dogs" really started to wear on me and it came to a point where I wanted to hit things when she would say it.

There is of course some bit of romance, but it's more Jules pining for Sawyer. Except Sawyer is her family rival and he won't give her the time of day. They used to be friends until their parents found out and forbid them from seeing each other. There are also a lot of secrets that their families are keeping from them too. I loved watching it all unravel. Why their families hate each other so much, the reason behind Jules fathers hoarding, why they can't just get over things and drop the family rivalry.

Now, my thoughts on the audio. I really loved the reader. I thought that she really captured Jules personality really well. She had the emotion and panic, and the little freak outs that Jules has. She vocalized Jules awkwardness, her snarkiness, and her when she is vulnerable. The reader really made me believe what Jules was going through. I honestly think that trying to read this book, I would have really been annoyed with Jules and not connected well. I don't do well with whiny, irritating characters, but I guess I understood her through the readers voice and things that would bother me didn't. I could also feel the urgency of the situation. I think that the audio was fabulous.

Overall I really enjoyed this story as a whole. The plot, the characters, and especially the emotion that the reader was able to bring to the audiobook. If you enjoy audiobook's and are a fan of psychological, suspense books, you should try this one out. It's a very fast listen being just over 5 hours. I flew through this one quickly and am looking forward to the next book.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed Derailed, the first book in this series, but I honestly couldn't stand Gavin. When I heard this was his book, I was intrigued, but also a bit nervous going into it. I really wanted to know more about Becca though, and I was hoping that Gavin could redeem himself in my eyes. It took a while, but he totally did. And I loved Becca. The characters are my favorite part of this series. Not just the ones that the book focuses on, but all of the secondary characters too. Alyssa Rose Ivy makes you really fall for the characters and care what happens to them.

Becca was a character that took a bit to get used to, but I really love her as I got to know her better. She really kind of stays in her own shell and it takes a lot to start breaking that down. As we find out why it makes a lot of sense why she acts the way she does. The only thing that I was really bothered by, was how she was constantly trying to push Gavin away. Almost trying to make him not want to be around her. She could be really bitchy, but I suppose I might act the same in her situation too. She really had a lot of growth through this book though, and I respected her a lot for really caring about her career and wanting to make sure that she completed school and worked toward the career she has been dreaming about. No matter what came her way, that was always the most important thing for her.

Gavin is a tough one for me. I never thought that I could like him. He was such an arrogant, pushy jerk in Derailed and was still a total douche in the beginning of this, but once we start to discover things about his past, you kind of understand him more. Don't get me wrong, he is still a bit too straight forward and pushy, and boy does he do a few really stupid things. Really though, underneath all of that he is just as broken and insecure as Becca is. He is actually super sweet, charming, and romantic. By the end of this book he totally made my swoon-worthy fictional guys list!

This book had all of the things that make a contemporary great to read. It had romance, drama, misunderstandings, more romance, and most of all, character growth. I loved watching Gavin and Becca get to know each other and uncover each others pasts as they grow to trust each other more. Of course there is heartbreak and plenty of moments that make you laugh too. Overall, the writing was great and I loved this. I really enjoyed Becca and Gavins story and I can't wait for Wrecked to get Jake's story!!

My Thoughts

I love a good mystery, especially when it messes with your mind. I loved the memory loss aspect of this. I also liked that we weren't quite sure what was going on, whether Mallory actually is crazy or not. You start to wonder if you are missing something which to me was more frustrating than anything. With most mysteries you get hints here and there, but this wasn't like that. We don't learn anything about what happened until Mallory does. We are as in the dark about what really happened as she is. I was so frustrated and confused, but it made me eager to keep going and figure out what the eff was going on.

Mallory is one hard character to figure out. Mostly because she is totally unstable. She is constantly paranoid feeling like Brian's presence is around and she swears that she can feel it. She hears the booming heart beat, and she even wakes up with bruises from where she feels someone or something grabbing onto her. She is constantly in fear, but doesn't know whether it's real or not. She is away at a fancy boarding school, but things are not better for her. People are weird, and she doesn't know who she can trust. The one person she thinks she can trust is the person who pushed her away years ago. I didn't connect with her, but I did like her and enjoyed going through this book in her head.

There is a little bit of romance in this, but it's not a main focus of the story. I liked that there was a bit of history to Mallory and Reid too, it wasn't just some random guy. Their families know each other and their fathers were best friends. They used to be friends so they already know each other. And even at that, they don't just all of a sudden jump into things with each other. Reid is just there for her when she needs him and he believes her when she doesn't even know if she believes herself.

This is a super hard review to write because I can't really say anything without giving things away. I think you are supposed to go through this book absolutely confused, and I definitely was. I think that it's intentional and I kind of liked it. I am one who figures out mysteries relatively easy, but this book just doesn't give you much information to really figure anything out until nearly the end. When it all unravels it makes sense, but not all of it is anything you would see coming at all. I only wish that there had been at least a little bit to go on even if it didn't let you figure things out. This to me was quite confusing for most of it to the point where I was going "WTF is going on?" in my head. I did enjoy it overall, but I think that it was too secretive for the fist 2/3 and then the last part was a bit too much too quick.

So what do you think? I really like both. I think the first one is more romantic and cute looking, where as the special edition looks more like an adult romance than a YA one, but they are both appealing to me. I also love the pink on the black and white!! I would pick up either off of a bookstore shelf though.

My Thoughts

It's books like this that remind me why I really like reading paranormal books. I have gotten away from it lately in favor of other genres and it's been quite a while since I read a really great vampire book. I really love Rebecca Maizel's writing and how she really immerses you in the story. I also really love that she didn't recap everything that happened in the first book like some sequels tend to do. I fell back into this world rather quickly. What makes this book wonderful is the suspense, the emotional turmoil, and the increased danger. Things are much more crazy in this second installment and the intensity has been turned up a few notches.

Lenah has gotten used to being a human for the most part, but her adjusting is the least of her worries. She now not only has to worry about her own safety, but the safety of those who she cares about. She has to endure more deaths while also suffering the agony of heartbreak. Still trying to heal from losing her best friend, and not really knowing where things stand with her boyfriend Justin, she realizes that being human is far harder than she thought. She is also fighting her inner demons. The memories of what she was, how vicious and evil she was as a powerful vampire queen. I loved watching how she grows in this one and how she does anything she can to protect everyone. She is a bit selfish, but she realizes it and really wants to change and be a good person. Not just for her, but for everyone. I loved seeing that side of her come out. 

There is a new, very powerful vampire who wants the ritual Lenah used to become human. She is determined to kill everyone Lenah has ever cared about one by one until Lenah gives it to her. It will make her the most powerful vampire to ever exist. She is smart and dangerous. Far more dangerous than Lenah or anyone expected. She will stop at nothing. She is not afraid to attack in public or even go onto the school grounds or Lenah's dorm. This is one scary vampire chick, that's for sure!

I think that what I loved most was the interactions and emotions between the characters. Lenah wanting to love Justin, but not knowing how after having loved Rhode for literally hundreds of years, Justin trying to forgive Lenah for still loving Rhode and doing anything he can to make her happy, and Vicken... oh, he just cracked me up half the time. He had some of the funniest lines. What surprised me the most was Tracy. She seems so quiet and hidden inside her own shell after all of the events that have happened, but she really amazed me at one point. She was so different from how we see her. I don't want to say anything else about that. What I am trying to say is that the characters just have so much depth and it just takes a while of stripping away each of the layers to see all the sides of them. Fantastic story continuation, amazing character development, and a great ending that leaves you wanting more, but is not a major cliffhanger. This book was really great and it has renewed f my love for vampire novels.

My Thoughts

When I first heard about this book I was really excited to read it, then as early reviews started appearing I started to get a bit nervous. I know we all have different tastes when it comes to books though, and I was still interested in this. I am glad that I decided to still give it a try, and then signed up for the blog tour. It's not a book that I would say I loved, but I did like it. It took a bit for it to all settle in after I was done. Had I written my review right away it may have been totally different from how it is now. Upon finishing the book I didn't think that I really liked it, but as days passed and I thought about it there really was a good story underneath.

I will start with my feelings on Zoe. She's fifteen, but has had a pretty rough life. Her father is an  abusive drunk, and she basically has to try to take care of the household while living in fear of being beat or worse. Her mother died when she was younger so she has been suffering her fathers abuse with no one to protect her or stand up for her. She's obviously very broken and just wants someone to care about her. She finds that in Will. He makes her feel special and when he asks her to run away with him of course she is going to say yes. She starts off very weak and easy to walk all over, but she does start to come out of her shell and she is a smart and nice girl who just wants to do what is right. Unfortunately I never connected with her character, but I did sort of come to understand her.

Now onto Will. I have a hard time with bad boys who are actually bad. It's one thing to be broken and act like a tool, but the whole flying off in a rage and mentally abusing is not okay with me. I did not like Will. I don't care what he has been through in his life, I can't make myself like a character like him. I could tell that he really, truly cared about Zoe, but when she would say or do something he wouldn't like he would insult her and make her feel bad, and even things to the point of pulling the car over and yanking her out of it because she said something he didn't like. Not okay. He is like a ticking time bomb waiting to go off and he actually scares her at times because she has become so used to abuse. I am sure he does have some redeemable traits, but really, I was totally over trying to get to know him within a chapter or two.

You would think that this would involve a lot of stealing and running from the cops, but it didn't. It was mostly all just Will constantly being paranoid and thinking they are being followed. For someone who is afraid to be caught he really does some stupid things too. Once again, having to do with his ridiculous temper. There was really not much action or suspense in this book. In fact it was pretty boring for most of it. Mostly, I think it's supposed to focus on the characters and not on plot at all, but with characters that you don't care much for it doesn't make for a very interesting read. If I had been invested in the characters I think that this book would have been suspenseful and emotional, but it was just okay to me. Underneath all of the seemingly boring stuff, there is a depth to the characters that I think some people will really like. This may not have been a favorite of mine, but I do think that a lot of people will really like it.

My Thoughts

I really like witch books, so I was excited to read this one. It sounded so fun and cute. And it was. The story was fun to read and I enjoyed seeing what would happen next. I liked how the characters interacted with each other, even if I didn't particularly care for a lot of them. This book gave me a kind of Mean Girls vibe, and I really enjoyed it.

Brooklyn is from a family of witches who don't really use their powers, so hers have been locked. It's not until her 16th birthday that her powers are unlocked. She has always been invisible, and so what is the first thing she does? Gives herself a makeover to be supermodel perfect so she can try to get a coveted spot with The Elite. She gets so obsessed with being popular that she does awful things and seems to lose who she really is. I get that she just wanted to be popular, but I felt like she really took it too far. She knew that the things she was doing was wrong, but she kept convincing herself that she was almost in with the popular crowd. I'm sorry, but if someone kept giving me "tests" to see if I would really fit in, I would tell them to eff off. Underneath it all though, Brooklyn is a great girl, it just took a little too much for her to finally realize how stupid she was being.

Asher was probably my favorite character. He was so understanding and great to Brooklyn. He didn't care if she was popular or not. He liked her for the real her, not the fake Brooklyn trying to fit in. In fact, he doesn't like The Elite and doesn't see why Brooklyn wants so badly to be part of their group. He will pretty much do anything for Brooklyn. He was so sweet and charming. I really wanted him to get through to Brooklyn. I was hoping that how much he cared about her would me more important than popularity.

Overall I thought that this was a fun book, but I was so mad that Brooklyn kept lying and hiding things from Asher when he had been nothing but understanding even when discovering she had lied before. All he wants from her is honesty and she could have prevented so much drama if she just opened up to him and didn't lie. I also was annoyed that she kept letting The Elite walk all over her. It's one thing to prove loyalty, but they keep having her do all this illegal stuff and she's totally okay with it. She is pretty shallow and stupid a lot of the time and I couldn't quite get past that. Otherwise I thought that it was a great book.
