I didn't ask for any of this.
I didn't ask to be some kind of hero.

But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?

Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There's still a yellow brick road—but even that's crumbling.

What happened? Dorothy.

They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

My name is Amy Gumm—and I'm the other girl from Kansas.

I've been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.

I've been trained to fight.

And I have a mission.

My Thoughts

I love The Wizard of Oz, so a retelling of this story was a must read!! I really enjoyed this take on the book. It was fun, adventurous, and I really enjoyed the characters. The main character Amy is spunky, snarky, and fun. I really liked how she viewed everything and her thought process about things. This was dark, but humorous book and I really liked listening to it.

Amy is our main character. She hasn't had the best life. Her mom has a lot of issues, and Amy doesn't really have friends. She gets ranked on by the popular girl, who also happens to be pregnant. This may not seem to matter in my review, but little details about things in the book do matter later when you think back on them, and when Amy thinks back on them. She wakes up in a messed up version of Oz and is convinced that she is hallucinating. As she travels through Oz, meets people, and discovers herself, she really does grow a lot as a character. I really enjoyed her "don't give a crap" personality. She as a fun character to follow through this journey.

We get all of the great characters from The Wizard of Oz in creative ways. Especially Dorothy. Now she is quite a character. She in nothing like the sweet and innocent Dorothy we are used to. She is too perky, too fake, and too evil. She is power hungry for magic, and will do anything she can to make sure everyone and everything follow her rules. The munchkin we meet is really awesome too. I really liked her. Mostly, I really loved how good and evil are opposite in this.

The audio of this was really great. I thought the narrator was perfect for the story. She put the emotion into the story. She made me believe that she was Amy. She was able to make all the characters their own as well. I was able to get completely into the story and found myself wanting to keep listening.

This was a fun adventure and a great take on one of my favorite stories. It had a lot of humor, a lot of action, and just a fun journey to follow. Each chapter ended to make you not want to stop and just read one more. I did want to know more about some things, but overall it was told very well, and didn't leave me wanting much. This is an author that I can't wait to read more of!!

  1. This seems to be a really polarizing read--either people loved it or people hated it. I am really intrigued by the idea of a retelling of Oz, because it sounds all kinds of awesome. I am still rather torn whether i'll pick this up or not, but I will probably give into my curiousity. Hm..Dorothy sounds pretty different here, eh?

    Lovely review, Amy! <33
